Starter is about a year old, battery is new, altinator is new. Grounds are good. Could start cruiser with a jump box because it would not start under its own power.

Truck struck will not start at all now I hear the clicking when you turn the key.

I checked the power going to the starter and it had 12 amps going to it before key was engaged but when key is turns it drops to below 12 amps to about 11amps

Anybody have any suggestions on how to get my cruiser back on the road.

I would take the starter off, open it up, and clean all of the contacts. I had a rebuild starter and it did the same as you describe. After cleaning everything up with some sand paper and applying some dielectric grease to the contacts, it hasn't given me a problem.

Also check that your battery terminals are making good contact...a bad terminal connection can cause the same symptoms.

x2 on the battery terminals. Take them off the posts and clean them with the wire brush tool, then put them back on.

Verify that your batt is good & strong. What volts do you have @ the batt ?

I don't think it's supposed to be this way but my experience w/my 62 is that it will barely have enough juice to start at low 12's. At 11.9 V it would not start at all. I put a fresh batt. that was @ about 12.6 V & it fired right up.

tap the starter and see if it starts.may be the plunger sticking. it may have been a coincicdence that it started when you hooked up the jump box.

THANKS

I am going to pull the battery and see about getting a new one. But the battery I have is less then a year old but I did one time catch an arch off the battery so mabey the battery is going bad.

I also purchased a high capiticity battery last time.

I am getting 12.3 amps at the battery and about that at the starter before I turn the key.

I am also going to run a jumper wire from the battery to the starter and see what happends.

Anybody think this could be an ignition or a netural safety issue??

Does any body have specs on what a good cold cranking amps I should have on the battery.

Don't spend any money on anything till you charge and test your battery. The voltage you stated is too low. You should be seeing 13.2V or there abouts on a healthy, fully charged battery.

There is no way to test/evaluate the starter or starting circuit without proper voltage.

Second action will be to find what pulled the battery voltage down. Current drains come from accessories left on, failed charging system regulators or possibly the charging system has failed to charge your battery in the first place.

EDIT: I saw you described "amps" and think you mean volts, correct?

Starter

I meant volts not amps I replaced the altnator and according to the tester I had I was driving the veh around on the battery since the altinator was not charging the battery. I may have just killed that battery and now it is not working at its optimial level.

I will put my battery charger on the battery and see it hold a charge. I always notice that It volt are not above 12.5 the truck will not start.

Your battery may recover if you give it some time with a fully charging alternator. Keep an eye on two things: the battery voltage at rest fully charged (13.2v or slightly more) and voltage while cranking (12v approx for 30 sec) These will give you an indication of the batteries capacity to continue to operate the vehicle reliably.
