Hello all, longtime lurker but first time poster. My 87 60 series suddenly would not start on Friday. It ran fine that morning but as I was leaving school I heard just a single loud click. No cranking at all. However, I was able to push it out of the parking spot and got it pointed downhill so I could pop it into gear and it started and ran perfectly normally. I then parked on hills and repeated the process for the rest of the day with success. Since then I have verified it is not the battery, voltage is good and an attempted jump have earned the same single loud click. Additionally I replaced the starter and solenoid with a new unit from duralast with the same result. I did notice that a ground strap was disconnected but it seems as if it has been disconnected for some time. Any suggestions? A friend who has experience with a BJ60 suggested the starter relay however I believe that does not exist in a gasser? Really appreciate any help.

When you tested the battery, did you perform a load test as well? Batteries that are on the way out can show 12VDC but lack the cranking amps which can present in the way you described. I'd also check the ground next to the battery as well, along with your battery terminals.

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers, James

Bingo. Went and got the battery tested today, it was bad. It also was the wrong size battery, too small. Got to love previous owners. Thanks for the help! I should have asked before I pulled the starter off..
