I am looking at an old rig that has been sitting for few years. What's the best way to fire up this motor. concerned about any damage i may cause with oil all drained into the pan.

You could take the distributor out, and use a screwriver in a drill to prime the oil pump.. Take out the spark plugs and shoot a bit of oil in each cylinder.. Remove the rocker cover and lubricate the valve gear.. Crank the engine with the spark plugs removed to get oil circulating before starting.. Reinstall the sparkplugs, check timing, check for good fuel in carb and attempt to start..

Is your user name an amateur radio callsign?

This is exactly what I needed! Thanks.

Yes, my HAM call sign. But I am no longer active :-(

ok - so one other question: how do i tell if this is an F engine or a 2F engine? '76 was a transition year, no?

Hey Rob, I've watched your videos a few times now, and it just dawned on me how your videos are proof of how an old Toyota engine can raise from a prolonged sleep a lot easier than an old cheby :)

VU2BFX...have you checked to make sure your engine is not seized? Does it still have the old fan blade? There are a couple of threads on starting old engines...and a few more on why you should change that old steel fan to a newer plastic one.

I will not tell you what to do, but I can tell you what I would do...I would take the plugs our...drop a little mystery oil in the there (each cylinder), and wait a couple of days, then see if she will turn over. I would then change the oil and filter, do what was mentioned above, get some clean gas, and cross your fingers.

People have swapped engines many times. Rob found an engine from an early '60's in his '71...you have any pics of your engine?

What about numbers on the engine? Take those numbers, and check the SOR website to see if you can find the date.

I will see the rig this weekend - till then I only have a few photos. Here are a couple of the engine. The engine is probably not seized as owner says he can turn over by pulling the fan belt.

Squirt a little Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder with spark plug removed. This should loosen any stuck rings. Let it sit overnight. With a fully charged battery and fresh gas....give her a go. ASSuMing you have checked other fluids, crankcase, transmission/Transfercase and differentials. Zerk every zerk. You know.....;)

Thanks - is the top of the carb missing? It looks like something needs to be on top of those two squares......

Thank you. I could not tell if there was a housing between the filter and the carb. I am not familiar with the '76, having worked only on a '66 with a humble single barrel carb :)

Can anyone tell if this rust is surface or more serious? I'm guessing the black goop is the rubber mat that is decomposing......

That rust is not real bad but probably has already eaten some of the metal. take a screw driver and pick around in it and you can tell from that....

Assuming worst case, would appreciate a swag on what it would cost to replace those floor boards. That seems to be where most of the rust is. Do you get these panels and just wel them on, or do they have to be fabricated?

Thanks Maui Cruiser - I noticed the brake lines :)
