I've been having an issue with starting lately. I'll have to turn the key numerous times before the starter will engage. It would click but the starter would not turn. Battery and cables to the starter are all secured with no corrosion. When it does engage it works fine.

This morning, when I started the starter kept motoring. When I turned the key to off it kept motoring, and when I turned the key on the engine would start but the starting kept going. I had to disconnect the battery.

Any ideas out there? It's a 97FJ80.

Thanks

Sounds like the classic starter contact problem. It's a simple job to replace the contacts. See the FAQ, Maintenace section for the write-up on starter contacts. Note the contacts in that are a different part number (diff starter) but the pictures and methods are the same.

You should be able to get the parts from your local Toyota dealer if you want them today. Otherwise, get them from cruiserdan and you will have them by the end of the week.

Another vote for the starter contacts and a word to the wise, this is not something to put off. Waiting could cost you more wether it is a reman. starter or an engine fire. Fix it asap!

2.0kw (most likely starter) part numbers:

28226-66060, 28226-72010, 28235-54380

There ya go, Take those part numbers to your local dealer and an 45 minutes to change them out; 10 minutes on the bench, 10 to get it out 10 to put it back and 15 to dirnk a few beers.

Thanks guys, you rock. It's been a while since I've done some elbow work but will attempt to do this on my own.

Or, you could pay the dealer $756.29 like I did, and get a New starter, battery, PHH, and a kiss.

When all was said and done, I wished I had done it myself. When I took the battery back to the NAPA store I bought it from, I found out the dealer sold me a battery I didn't need....:censor: .

BTW, I'm rebuilding the starter along with my engine rebuild 95k after buying the new one.

ps The guy was not that good a kisser, either.

Joe,

Not to be too rough, but when you're a newbie and a veteran member offers parts availability and asks where you are it is only polite to answer and thank.

DougM (Miss Manners)

He did contact me by e-mail. I think he thought I was some kind of parts vendor or something.

I just have a complete set on hand and don't expect to use them anytime soon as I need to replace the solenoid assembly.

Dear Miss Manners,
When someone is answering a question put out in public privetly via e-mail, should he post up for the rest of the crowd so they can know too even if it only concerens the person they are answering?

Hopless in hopenhagen.

j/k Doug - you were right about it being the right thing to do, I just couldn't resist the miss manners thing.

Sorry guys, like I said I'm new to the forum and wasn't sure how things worked. I did contact both Rick and Cruiserdan by their e-mail. Both guys have been very helpful. Rick if you want to get that stuff off your hands I'd be glad to take it. If not I can call Cruiserdan at American Toyota. No disrespect guys, but there is a reason I have rookie next to my name.

Good on ya for posting back up and closing the thread.

Cheers,

Curtis
