The starter on my 1986 BJ70 appears to have died. I have checked everything else and the starter is the last choice. My problem is getting it out to have it checked and repaired as required. It appears to be trapped in place.

From above: the steering linkage, master cylinder/booster, fuel shut off mechanism block removal

From below: the frame and engine block combine to block it with too small a space

From front: the motor mount blocks the path

From side: frame and fender fence it in

In one manual I have, it implied that you disassemble the starter in place and remove it as components. However, the bolts for the armature housing are blocked from coming out by the motor mount, so this does not appear to be viable.

There must be a trick or a specific method for getting the starter out that I am missing. Can you help get me on the right track?

Thanks

3 ways to do it
one: cut the fender and take it out behind the tire... there are a few of us that have done it on our bush pigs. REAL easy.
two: hold tongue in right place in mouth, don't breath for 5 minutes, pull the starter towards the front and tilt down, turn just right and down it comes... VERY tight but can be done.
three: remove motor mount bolt, lift motor and pull starter.

Wow!

I assume this is easier to do on a RHD?

Wayne,
Thanks for the help. I wound up finding an easier way. I removed the brace inboard of the starter. This brace is between the bell housing and the engine block. To remove the starter, I rotated it so it was pointed up, then a worked the starter mounting flange between the frame & block. Once it was down, I rotated the starter 90 degrees so the rest would follow. I put the spare starter in the same way.

But I still have nothing. I have power at the starter via the power cable and actuation lead (when the key is turned). It is a simple system, but it is getting the better of me. Where could it be bad?

Thanks
