In the 1996 Land Cruiser Factory Service Manual they list a Special Service Tool (SST) Oil Filter Wrench #09228-22020-01.

Is this SST still available?

Does anyone on the board have experience using it?

How much is it and is it worth purchasing?

Thanks

unless the last person to lay their paws/hands on the filter was a 600lb gorilla, you really don't need a filter wrench. just a good pair of latex or rubber gloves.

No need to order from OTC. If you need one there are a ton of oil filter wrenches at your local auto parts store that will work as well or better than that one. That type of socket generally only works on one brand of filter, if you get a way tight one they will strip the flats on the filter and you will need a different type anyway.

This type works well and is widely available.

Mine seam to stick on there pretty good, much tighter than I install them at, I might be able to get them loose if I could get two hands in there but the access is crap.

If you are using the small OEM filters (20004 and several others that use the came can dimensions) "AmPro" # T70404, 73MM 14 flutes, fits perfectly, I got mine at advanced auto.

Many more methods

Doug has been putting his on very lightly, less than spec says it makes them easy to remove and they do not leak, my paranoia does not allow me to do this.

Thanks for the info. I have a oil filter rachet style wrench that I purchased at Advanced Auto parts. However, when I used it the space for the rachet was very limited and it seemed that when the wrench was fully seated on the filter the ratchet connection would hit the top of the filter and disengage constantly. I was curious if the Toyota SST is unique or just another rachet style wrench.

It's a standard socket type.

the one I have does not have this problem, the square drive is in a raised portion of the socket, you can fully seat the extension and the filter at the same time.

I put oil around the seal, and hand tighten. After it is hand tight, I back it off a hair. They seem to get tighter after they have been on for a while. I have never had one leak, and can always loosen it by hand when it's time for a change.
