Jim is shipping my rear bumper next week. He can have it powedercoated, but honestly the cost is a deterrent for me. Can I just paint it myself? and what paint should I use that will look good? Thanks:cheers:

My opinion is if you are not going to beat on the bumper you can powder coat it and it will look nice. If you might drag it across some rocks then raddle can it. I've raddle canned my bumpers with Rustoleum Industrial semi-gloss black and they turned out nice - well, nice enough for a trail Pig.

You can always powdercoat later so i say rattle can and see how you like it. If you decide to later you can always pull it and pc it then. Plus will help with splitting the costs.

Where are the pics?

I rattle canned my sliders from SROR under the following theory. Even with my pansy use of my 62, I will scatch them. If I scratch powder coat, I'm screwed. If I scratch rattle can, well, more rattle can! I think the same logic applies to bumpers, especially the rear, which can be easily scratched through daily use.

I first sanded very lightly, then used a Rustoleum primer (2 coats), sanded lightly again, and applied 2 coats of Rustoleum semi-gloss (semi flat?) black. So the theory is even if I do scratch them, there are several layers, including two layers of primer.

I think Jim also primes them before he ships them out to prevent any rust from starting.

No pics yet- should ship to me next week. It should get here the same time as the wagongear tailgate hatch.

i have a kaymar bumper that i got from a friend of mine. it was black, i sanded it and painted it along with 5 rims. i used a color from GM no rattle can. oh i forgot i first used epoxy primer. it took me about 4 hours with dry time in between coats about 15 minutes.

If you paint it yourself I would allow several days for the paint to cure well before you mount the bumper. I've had poor results throwing primed then painted Rustoleum raddle can parts on and having the paint scratch off easily before several days of cure time.

Regardless of what you do, have it done yourself. No need to pay extra for something that you could have done locally...prob. cheaper.

paint it yourself
1.primer 2 times
2. rattle can 2 times
3. clear coat rattle can
let dry good between each coat
