Is it a long bed or shortbed? I know that the 79-83s, the shortbeds had smaller tanks than the long beds. Trim level would not have anything to do with tank capacity, but wheelbase did on early toyotas.

My 85 4Runner has something like 14.5 but the larger tank (I think) was standard in the SR5 models. I'm pretty sure that there is a thread here where Pappy did a swap to the larger tank.

yes. i saw that thread. thats where I got the 17.2 #. just looking for confirmation.

Not to be a smartass but how much does it hold when it's below E and you fill it up?

87 runner sr5 here. can vouch for 17ish. ive had her low, real low. drained her 10 ft short of the pump once. if its below E and i fill up it will go mid 16s usually. cant recallspecifics, prices lately here in LA have made it not so pleasant to give her a full belly.

17.2 gallons for the short beds. I've put 17 gallons in mine.

IIRC, there were quite a few different sizes on different years and sometimes different sizes even on the same models.

The parts catalog lists:

52 Liter
56 Liter
65 Liter
73 Liter

and cold spec versions of the same. All told there are about 15 different part #s. That was just going by the year and SR5.

hmmmm dumb question maybe, but what would it take to fit the 19.3 gallon tank into a fist gen 4runner. a couple custom brackets maybe or it is plain and simply too big to fit?

If you already have the 17.2 then I wouldn't think it worth the trouble. If you're upgrading from the 14 then perhaps.

I know to go from the 14 to the 17 on a first gen you need the fuel pump (or maybe just the fuel pump dip pipe) and the tank. I don't think you need anything else.

yeah good point. should bolt right up huh? the 14 to 17 would be a nice upgrade, especially if its bolt on

do all sr5 have the 17 gallon tank?

well, if the 17 bolts in, it wouldnt be bad. i mean i need to fix my sending unit in the tank anyways. especially if you had the 14 gallon like me.

i agree the 17 to 19 swap would not be as worth it cause of the work. but the drop in replacement...im down for that
