Restoring a Cruiser is hard love sometimes. I figured out just how to get rid of the annoying sound the old window cranks make. Lithium grease doesn't do it. WD40 doesn't do it. Marine grease doesn't even take care of it. So I tried a crazy idea and BINGO... It works perfectly.

I don't know where to get this stuff because it came in my mothers art supplies. It's brass ribbon. She used it for making casting mold dividers. Here's how to install:

Open the crank about as far as it will go to create gaps in the tightest areas. This (obviously) where the noise is coming from. Cut strips of brass in sections about an inch to inch and a half and slightly narrower than the spring band. Lay one piece in the gap for each layer. DONE.

Super easy. No mess.

I'm guessing the cad plating adds to the volume of noise but now I have a window crank that won't make noise or rust.

Interesting, I found that after cleaning and a little grease the springs were noisy but after cycling, they went silent again. I'll keep this in mind if it were to make noise again.

Very nice and interesting solution! I have to fix my window rattle issues so will check this out too. Thanks for sharing.

You're a beaut! I have that exact problem and was about to tackle it with grease etc this morning. They call that stuff "shimstock" I think. Thanks!
