Beowulf and I swapped springs last Saturday. I took his OME med and 305's, he installed slee's 4 inch springs. Thanks everyone that showed up to help your experience was invaluable. Got to meet some more cool local guys, turn some wrenches, eat some good pizza, and drink some beer. What more could you ask for? Big thanks to Mike and Connie for having us over. Here are some pics.

# 1 Before the lift

#2 Old Man Emu 865/851 springs and N73/N74E shocks 275/70/16 street tires

So Sunday morning I got to thinking about the running boards and I figured everyone can't be wrong... So I gave in and took them off. Here it is all finished up. I think it looks awesome.

Anyone looking for a good set of oem running boards?

No, Pristine won't fit in the garage with the roof rack. :frown: I bought a pulley system (not installed yet) that will lift the rack and store it flush with the garage ceiling. Ross and I can get the rack on and off the truck in about 15 minutes.

The complete 4" Slee lift isn't finished. I still have some adjustable panhards and control arms and a few other bits. I will be using some special caster plates that I got from Landtank. It drives pretty crappy right now with no caster correction.

Noah and I are very grateful to have help from Onur, Graham, Steve, Rory, and Ali. I owe you guys big time! It was a great day and we were blessed with great weather for working outside on the trucks.

For those that haven't met Onur, he is 6'5" so you can see the new springs really made a difference!

Which reminds me of a bumper sticker I've seen around:

Lord, help me to be the person my dog thinks I am...

Ok so now I have the OME bushings in and the truck has been aligned. It seems as though now the steering wheel is off center (crooked). Is this normal for a lifted 80 or do I need to adjust the relay rod some more? Its not as bad as the 70 but I was hoping for more

Noah,

I would expect that the steering wheel should bea ble to be centered. Don't ask me how but it should.

Where did you get it done and how much if you don't mind?

The technique I've used to recenter the steering wheel after an alignment is to remove the nut holding it to the steering column shaft. Remove the steering wheel from the shaft and center as best as possible. The spline will limit the accuracy of your centering but you can probably get it pretty close.

I think that technically, the alignment tech should center the wheel prior to starting the alignment but even that may not garauntee a centered wheel after alignment.

So Mike, are you going to regear? If so, to what?

I am planning 4.88 gears. 4.56 gears would get it back to the equivalent of stock 4.10 gearing. I hear a lot of guys that run 35's with stock gearing and they say it is acceptable and if you use the PWR mode on the tranny and turn off OD, then it drives OK. This is poppy-cock. At 6,000' the thing is a slug with stock gears and 35's but I knew it would be. I may not be able to get it done before Moab though so I will leave on Monday for a Wednesday afternoon planned arrival.... or I'll tag along with you Jon.... I may be able to keep up with the 4cyl 22RE. :D

I've been pleased with the combination of the 4.88 gears and 35 inch tires. The truck still runs about 8% lower gearing than stock, so it's more of a benefit off-road than running at high speeds on the pavement, which is a good fit for what I want to do with the Cruiser. It will still run 75 - 80 mph as needed, but off-road is the priority.

I agree with Mike - I think the elevation makes a big difference. The guys running stock gears and 35's must have a lot more oxygen where they live than we do here in the high desert.

Just ask Beno, he is feeling it right now with stock gears and 315s...
