I hope at least you'll be doing some surf casting. My favorite is for the pomano with ultralite gear. I used to go to Cape Point campground when they stayed open past labor day. These days with Chump's cuts, who know if they're even open anymore.

Yessir I am planning on it! I need to buy a reel for surf fishing at least, @neslrac what was the brand you'd recommended?

What kinda bait/lure were you fishing Pomano with?

I have two Penn 704z Spinning Reels from the '70's, one that I put on a 10' Fenwick rod (drum, blues). Today, I'd go with their top reel. If you want "the best", try the

Reels – IRTReels

I have a 7' medium heavy graphite blank I made into a spinning rod with an Ecooda reel (spanish mackeral, etc.), and for the pomano, I use a 5' light graphite blank I made into an ultralite spinning rod with a 716z Penn. For bait, I use sand fleas you can catch at the water's edge with a scoop and put on a hi/lo rig and cast out 15' or so and slowly reel in. Since pomano are nomadic, they are only available when they migrate down the coast to FL. When pompano are running, they are right in the waves by the waters edge.

You can borrow some of my gear if you want.

Sounds like a fun trip! I haven't been to the Outer Banks in over 30 years, but we always went down close to the point. With absolutely nothing down there except for a beach and lighthouse at the time and a few A-Frames for rent, there was a bakery that made apple fritters...we'd get them nice and warm right out of the fryer...sickeningly sweet, greasy, and delicious!

I'd consider making the trip, but my son invited me out for a day trip on the 17th offshore from OC MD for the opening of the Black Sea Bass season.

Have fun! 🦀 🦀

Orange Blossom Bakery.
It is still there, They are called apple uglies.

There's always the KOA campgrounds, and my favorite, the Cape Point campground run by the National Park Service. There were no saltwater licenses or online campsite booking when I last went there in the '90s. The Cape Point campgroundnow only runs until Labor day. I used to go down in October when it was cooler and much less crowded.

Last time I was at frisco was october 2006. Don't think I went in the water but weather was amazing, much cooler and more enjoyable than the summer months when we'd go as a boy.

My avatar photo was taken on that trip.

As I recall, one time I couldn't get a site at Cape Point and went to Frisco. Because the campground is in a "bowl" like depression, it didn't get much wind and made the mosquitos almost unendurable.

The fall is the best time to go to the outer banks . The risk of a storm is worth the weather/fishing and lack of crowds. the Aug- Oct time is prime. Just keep an eye on the weather forecast and hurricane outlook and plan accordingly.
