I hope at least you'll be doing some surf casting. My favorite is for the pomano with ultralite gear. I used to go to Cape Point campground when they stayed open past labor day. These days with Chump's cuts, who know if they're even open anymore.

Yessir I am planning on it! I need to buy a reel for surf fishing at least, @neslrac what was the brand you'd recommended?

What kinda bait/lure were you fishing Pomano with?

I have two Penn 704z Spinning Reels from the '70's, one that I put on a 10' Fenwick rod (drum, blues). Today, I'd go with their top reel. If you want "the best", try the

Reels – IRTReels

I have a 7' medium heavy graphite blank I made into a spinning rod with an Ecooda reel (spanish mackeral, etc.), and for the pomano, I use a 5' light graphite blank I made into an ultralite spinning rod with a 716z Penn. For bait, I use sand fleas you can catch at the water's edge with a scoop and put on a hi/lo rig and cast out 15' or so and slowly reel in. Since pomano are nomadic, they are only available when they migrate down the coast to FL. When pompano are running, they are right in the waves by the waters edge.

You can borrow some of my gear if you want.

Sounds like a fun trip! I haven't been to the Outer Banks in over 30 years, but we always went down close to the point. With absolutely nothing down there except for a beach and lighthouse at the time and a few A-Frames for rent, there was a bakery that made apple fritters...we'd get them nice and warm right out of the fryer...sickeningly sweet, greasy, and delicious!

I'd consider making the trip, but my son invited me out for a day trip on the 17th offshore from OC MD for the opening of the Black Sea Bass season.

Have fun! 🦀 🦀
