NF-1250 where they were stuck is indeed a section Summit Rd. That said, something tells me they probably weren't aired down, and probably didn't have a half dozen vehicles with winches with them...

I'll be the optimist and say I think we'll be fine through the Ochocos =p

I found where NF-1250 and NF-38 come together. Good news is that they made it a long ways up there from Paulina before getting stuck. So if all else fails we can drop south a little and keep heading East.

Saw that. Hopefully the weather holds out for us.

I'm getting pumped, is it time to leave for Oregon yet?!?!

:steer::bounce:cant wait to hit the road.

So, I spent all evening replacing the drivers side axle u-joint, only to find that the noise was actually coming from the passenger side...

I know the other side needs replaced anyways, but still... :bang:

I just downloaded an app called MotionX. If you guys dont have it I highly recommend it. It runs on your smart phone or iPad and runs off the internal GPS (no cell service needed). It has all the forest service road. You can download terrain maps for any area you want. You can also import .gpx tracks. And its only $1.99!! I got it on the iPad and iPhone. I have a handheld garmin also but the ease of use on iphone and ipad is super nice!

I have it, and I give it a solid meh rating.

1. you can't cache much map data for use when there is no cell signal
2. you can't "follow" a complete route, you can only do it in short sections which would require messing with it all the time
3. often times the map data that is cached is unavailable when there is no cell signal, even though you downloaded them already
4. it eats battery life so fast it makes your phone hot. Ipad may not have this problem, but my iphone does. Also I have to restart the phone to turn off the app, otherwise I get about 3 hours of battery life.

It does seem to work well for navigating to an individual point; i.e. camp 1 in a straight line.

I haven't actually used it, because I have a windows phone, but we use Avenza maps on ios and it seems to have worked very well thus far.

Truck is packed and ready for the drive down tomorrow. This is my first trip this year so I'm extra antsy. I kinda just want to take some sleeping pills and go to bed so it can be tomorrow already.

I use Gaia GPS and have been very happy with it, though it was a bit more than $1.99 at $19.99 or $40 annually for the pro version. I purchased the pro version for this trip after using the base version to travel the WABDR.

I have access to all sorts of overlays, can download as much map data as your phone can hold (I did our whole route at 1:24000 on a USGS Topo overlay which was about 900mb in size), follow a route for as long as your heart desires (did the whole WABDR, for example).

My one complaint is that like @tacosupreme says of the other app, it does eat battery. When we did the WABDR my iPhone 4 got reallll hot. Never malfunctioned, but it was almost uncomfortable to hold. Hoping the 6s doesn't have that problem (but I imagine it will).

Here's an example of an area where I didn't download the map (about 5 miles west of Prineville). As you can see my phone is in airplane mode as I wanted to be sure it wasn't deceiving me.

And here's an area along our route where I have downloaded the map.

Of course I can zoom out and the map overlay will scale as appropriate. This is as far in as I can zoom, however, without it degrading.

Good idea. Good night, everyone. haha

Truck is packed....not. Getting up early I am. Totally stoked.

Getting the last things fixed and the Cruiser packed. Headed to Prinville soon. Oh yeah!

Does anyone know if the gas station in prineville will be open at 6am? I am gonna fill up here in bend tonight but would like to top off in prineville in the morning. I think I'm gonna need every drop!

They used to be 24 hours, although I don't know for sure and their phone is busy. I did see they do carry non ethanol premium.

I'm waiting for the wifey to get off of work at 4:30 and we'll be on the road.

Figured some folks may be interested in these area forecasts for the respective camp sites.

Camp Location 1: Camp 1 NOAA

Camp Location 2: Camp 2 NOAA

Camp Location 3: Camp 3 NOAA

Just checked (here on thursday afternoon) and there is a "Hydrologic Outlook" which I have never even HEARD of, but is looking very, well, "adventurous"...

National Weather Service Watch Warning Advisory Summary

Figures. My 88 which has a snorkel I am trying to sell and did not want to bring, might have to rethink that;) Still trying to meet up Sat night

They generally precede a flash flood "watch", and if the warning criteria are met (actual flooding is imminent) then a warning is issued. Most of the way we'll have weather radio coverage to keep an eye on the situation. I don't think we'll need snorkels at any point on the route, but a rain jacket and boots may be a good idea. There are a lot of burn scars our Hydrologist is concerned about, but it's rare to get more than 1" of rain an hour on this side of the state. It has happened before and there is always a chance, but I think we'll be ok. Also the heaviest rain will be focused north of Camp 3, and by the time we get there the storms will have passed. We'll just be cautious not to set up tents right next to the creek!

@GSPRunner and I just got here to the Stafford Inn. Going to go get a couple radios, then probably head next door to the bar/steak house.

I am so packed its ridiculous. I bet I would weigh out at 7800+ lbs. I even tried to put my front sway bar back on this morning and found that one side was hitting the tie rod and so I just left it off. So should be an interesting trip! Cant wait!
