Spooling Synthetic Line

So I went to use my winch today, and when my friend was pulling out the line he went a little too far and the little metal crimp on the end of the line nearest the winch pulled right off of the line allowing the whole rope to come free (was previously fed through a hole in the winch drum with a bolt through it to stop it pulling through).

Is there a safe way for me to re-attach the line without going through the whole process of removing my bumper and winch? I've seen a few references to using duct tape for this purpose, but I'm not fully convinced. I suppose on the 8274 I would only need to remove the small plastic cover on the bearing block to get at the inside of the drum, but I'm still open to suggestions.

What winch do you have?

All the spade connector does is hold the end of the line in place so the line will wrap around the drum. Friction from the wraps hold the line to the drum under load - not the spade connector or the duct tape. The end by design should come off rather easily if a minimum 8 wraps + are not maintained to keep from damaging the drum.

You can either install another spade type terminal (get one from an auto or electronics store) or use duct tape. For duct tape place the tail of you line across your drum from end to end along the main axis of the drum, tape both ends, then spool the line back over itself. The tape will break down a little over years so use some real duct tape, or Gorilla Tape, not wussy cheap duck tape.

It came off really easily. We were just pulling out the line to hook up and it fell right off. Winch is an 8274. The more I think about, removing the cover on the bearing block and tying a knot in the line seems like the best course of action.

Every 8274 that I've ever attached line to I've done it that way - put the line through the drum and tie one simple overhand knot. I like to tie the knot very close to the end of the line so if you don't maintain enough wraps the knot will hopefully pull through itself allowing the line to pull off the drum without damage.
