Hi everyone,
I need a little help. I'm in the process of converting this 66 axle off of my 45 project from drum to disc brake so I figured since I'm pulling the axle shafts out I might as well put new seals and bearings while I'm there. When I loosened the bolt for the spider gear shaft and it dropped down I heard a cling as if something fell. It was the curved spacer that I quickly fished out. I then rotated the whole axle to drain out the gear oil and something else fell out into the oil I was draining. It is a round flat shim about the size of a half dollar. I guessing since it has the same ID as the spider shaft that it goes somewhere with it. What I can't figure out is exactly where? I looked at several drawings of the differential, but I don't see that thing anywhere. It did say "this side up" on it. Any help is always appreciated.
thanx,
Craig

Does yours look like this?

curved one on the spider flat one on the side gear

Yes, mine looks like that. The flat one's inside diameter is the same as the pin that holds them together. I'm not getting where you say the side gear? The bigger gears have the c clips from the axles, correct?

Side gears are the bigger gear that are splined.
The washer you are referring to goes between the carrier and the spider gear. A little grease will help hold it in place so you can get the cross shaft back in.

Ok, so it goes carrier, flat spacer, curved spacer, then spider gear?

The thrust washer on the top goes between the carrier and the spider gear.
The thrust washer on the bottom goes between the side gear and carrier.
If something dropped out it's the small thrust washer(s) 1 per side

Those thrust washers I do have in their correct spots. I'll have to post up a pic of what fell out.

Yea post a picture, only other things to fall out are the c clips or center block.

Here is a top and bottom picture of it

I can't tell you how many diffs I have built and never seen that.

Lol...the only thing I can think of is that it’s a spacer between the carrier and thrust washer. If it is I have no idea how to get it in there.
