Season's Greetings to all.
Looking for a little troubleshooting guidance on my speedo situation.

I recently acquired a beautifully kept '73 FJ40 with a speedometer that doesn't work. After ordering & replacing w/a new cable, it still doesn't work.
I can see activity on the instrument panel when manually spinning the cable that goes into the gear box end, but once I screw it into the box and drive around...nothing.

Any thoughts/intel you all can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There is a driven gear, plastic splines, inside the tcase that wears out. The single bolt on the speedo housing secures it. Once removed, you will see the spline count stamped into the shaft so you can order a correct replacement.

Thank you for the details. Is this something that I'd order from Toyota, or is there an alternate/preferred vendor?

Thanks again.

Should be able to order from a dealer. IIRC, it retails for about $35.

If you look at the links in my signature, you will see that I am also a vendor. I would be happy to sell you a gear. But please keep in mind that unlike the dealer, I have a $100 minimum order. ;)
