Back around that time, IIRC, there was a change from the threaded speedometer connector to the push-in/clip-in speedometer connector. Have you had the speedo out of the cluster and in your hand? Are there threads around where the cable goes into the speedo? or is it the obvious click-in connector?
Pics of the back of the speedo?
There are no threads. This is a Frankenstein FJ40. It is a clip in speedo cable

W/o trying to digest this whole thread…I want to be sure of one thing.

1) Speedo cable attached at the T Case
2) Speedo cable NOT attached to the speedometer
3) Get the speedo cable where you can see the unattached end that is supposed to be attached to back of the speedometer
4) Can you actually see the end of the speedo cable turn while you are driving?

Yes, and thank you for the time to help try to figure this pickle out!

Well then, it would seem as if your issue is in one of 2 places…both of which you’ve essentially ruled out.

1). The actual connection where you attach the speedo cable to the back of the speedometer box.
2). The odometer itself.

I know we believe we already ruled these out…but?? The pictures I’m attaching probably won’t help you in any way, but they are from when I had to disassemble my odometer several years ago. My solution was to buy a ‘new’ odometer from Mud Classified.

@cvan1971man Any resolution to this?
Just got a new cable in today from SOR. fixed the problem. Going to pull the old cable out of the sheath tomorrow and see if there is a break somewhere. Will post an update then. There appeared be a difference in length from end to end when compared side by side (how much was sticking out of the cluster side)

I replaced the driver gear in the Transfer Case, and it did not fix it. I Purchased a new speedometer cable and it fixed it. Upon looking at the old speedo cable, I think that the cause could have been a kink in the cable. WHen I pulled the cable out of the sheath, there was no kinks, but the sheath had a memory to it from running down the firewall and turning under the tub.

Maybe the sheath had become a bit longer due to the kink, and the inner was then not quite long enough to engage at both ends?
