All,
I have a noisy speedo cable. It's really noisy when you first start driving then as the cable heats up it becomes less and less noisy.

Other then replacing the cable, has anyone sucessfully cleaned and greased the cable and eliminated the noise?

The FJ80 has over 200K on it if you're wondering.

Thanks in advance.

Jim,
I pulled mine out when I replaced the speed sensor for the cruise control. It's pretty easy, just unscrew the cap where the cable connects to the transfer case, grab the inner cable and twist ccw as you pull. The inner cable will come right out. Clean it, lube it, and replace.....pretty easy. I know there is some sort of speedo cable lube out there. I'd be careful not to put anything too thick on it.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I will definately try your way.

BTW, what kind of lube did you use?

Thanks,

Liquid graphite (SP?) was recomended in a 79 chevy van found this out abter I put bearing grease in it (bad idea), does the FSM say anything about it? no speed-o cable in the 96

I had a '90 4Runner that had the same problem. Found some speedometer cable lubricant at the parts store (liquid graphite, I think), disconnected the cable at the speedo head and put it in that way. Had to redo it every couple of years, but it took care of the noise.

I used a light coat of wheel bearing grease.....bad idea. I had to remove it again and clean it good. I used 3 in 1 oil the second time. I'd get the speedo cable lube from the parts store.....that's what I'm going to use in the spring.
