Hey all, wondering if a 17 tooth speedometer drive will make much difference over the original 16 tooth or if it will even work? This is for a ‘77.

It would likely fit. Yes it will be wrong. 4.11 gears vs 3.73 makes a giant difference (26%) in rpms vs torque as in top speed before the engine throws a rod or the low end grunt to crawl up a hill. 1/17 vs 1/16 is a lot less

Will have to search here on mud lots of talk on this. Not all gears mate to the drive gear. There are 4 plastic gears and two metal drive gears. One drive gear I think mates to 16,17,19 the other one only to 18. Im just guessing been a long time since i looked at this stuff or was there a 15 tooth gear also ,any ways not all are compatible with certain drive gear. I post info and pics from the EPC parts catalog with all the info in the past.

I believe the speedometer driven gear on the cable must match the speedometer drive gear in the transfer case. Note, microfiche pic is for US and Canadian market for the period from 03/69 to 07/80 and p/n's current as of 01/81.
