Hi All

I am preparing to replace my Speedo Cable Gear Seals - I've read the associated FAQs and all the pertinent links I can find.

I have seen where it's called 'straightforward' and also where it's described as 'difficult' as it pertains to reinserting/mating the gear with the transfer case.

I have never done anything like this before, I want to be sure I'm prepared to do this correctly.

Other than fishing the old seal out, are there any other issues I should expect going in?

Thanks!

It's pretty easy, just O-rings and the oil seal. Make sure the gear has plenty of lubricant, spins freely, and just ease it back in.

Don't forget to drain the t-case!!! the speedo gear is below the oil fill level!!!!!

Wow! Thanks! I didn't know that, but it makes sense - since I have a leak from it

That coulda made a nice mess :hmm:

Thanks Dick!

After re-reading your first answer, I'm not sure the two o-rings I got from CDan are all I need
You said, "It's pretty easy, just O-rings and the oil seal. Make sure the gear has plenty of lubricant, spins freely, and just ease it back in".

I have a small o-ring (about 1/2") and a large o-ring (about 3/4"-1") - should I have a third item (a seal)?

Also, what type of oil is used in the t-case? Never mind, I can look that up.

Thanks!

There's a felt seal that goes inside where the speedo cable screws on.

Thanks everyone... for your help on this!

It was a piece of cake, with your help and Poser's tips (FAQ) for getting the small seal out - e.g. soak the non-plastic parts in lacquer thinner - I couldn't even see that little seal until the lacquer thinner distorted it's shape.

Thanks again!
