I started up my car ('98 LX, 245k) 2-3 weeks back to find that none of my speakers were working properly. The front speakers are completely out, while the rear only emit a little sound if I turn the volume knob all the way up.

I thought I heard some light crackling in the front speakers leading up to this, but it was pretty faint.

Looking through this forum, I've found threads on related issues, but nothing that seems to fit this issue exactly. This post (2001 LC Amplifier Issues - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/2001-lc-amplifier-issues.1234913/) is related, but not all the speakers went out simultaneously. Nevertheless, does it sound like an amplifier issue?

I perform basic maintenance on this vehicle, but have never worked on vehicle audio electronics of any kind, though willing to give it a try. If it is the amp, is replacing it fairly straightforward? I'd appreciate any guidance.

OEM amp replacement is straightforward but probably pricey. All the work is done under the front passenger seat. Four bolt covers and bolts, one electrical connector, seat comes out. You then get greeted by the amp and God knows how many years of gunk buildup down there

Thank you! I'll give it a shot.

did you fix it? having the same problem with my 2001

Not yet. I spoke with the folks at Crutchfield to get an amp recommendation...and they ended up suggesting replacing the amp, the speakers, and buying a bunch of other stuff. So, I plan to remove the amp this week, buy something with similar specifications as the amp, then re-install and see if it plays well with my old speakers. I'll post an update when it's in.

As an update, I removed the amp and took it to a local car audio shop to see about a repair. They said the 'motherboard' was fried and replace it for $450. I plugged it back in...and the speakers still didn't work. I took it back to the shop, who diagnosed the problem as an electrical short from the subwoofer. The speakers all work great, as long as I unplug the subwoofer wire from the amp (I can't remember which color that is). Basically, the electrical short blew the motherboard. The shop said that repairing the subwoofer's foam lining should fix the problem, but I haven't done that yet.
