Hey All,
Here's a story... I rebuilt my rear diff two years back with new carrier bearings etc. First time doing so. I installed a spartan lunch box locker.
About a year later, with very little use, I was horsing around off-road and did a fast launch, spinning my rear tires in 2WD. Something instantly slipped, and there was a large grinding sound.
Got towed home.
Opened the diff and the ring and pinion were toast. The carriers came loose.

Now I must not have set up the preloads, etc, right.

But the Spartan is pretty rough, and sometimes in tighter turns or reversing, it feels like it jams and then cracks really loudly, unloading.

So, I had another diff lying around that is okay, but it's 3:73 instead of 4:11. I installed it and then put the locker back in.

It ratchets around corners, but not in a loud or noticeable way, unless you're in a tighter parking lot.

But now I have had to done some 60-120-mile runs in some hot weather. It gets really ornery then. It makes snaps and cracks, and awful s*** noise. Feels like it is snapping the axles.

I'm like, these are really s***ty things. They get warm and expand, and get too tight to ratchet? Now I don't know what oil I used again; maybe it has a friction modifier in it for LSD, which this should not have. Is this a thing? I probably used an 80w90 diff gear oil. Maybe a 80W140 extreme pressure plain oil would be better.

Any advice? I did not use any shims or thrust washers etc. It says in the install guide not use anything. But I feel like it is going to damage something.

most of that sounds about right.

All my reading online says they can do this. Im okay with ratcheting sounds. But this loud snap or pop is so loud its like something is breaking. Ive had pedestrians duck for cover... holyheck..

I have one. And haven’t had issues.

Any shavings in the oil?

I don’t have much to say, but if you think about it, ANY locking device that is engaged at fast or sudden speeds can be expected to make some sort of noise? It certainly can’t be good for your differential, hence potential binding? I dunno, any road use with an autolocker with seems like you are asking for trouble. Throw it in the front.

Hope you figure it out.

Check the real size of your tires. Take them off and set the side by side and measure with a tape. Know of an instance where sidewall read the same but tire was off by a about 1/4". Changing tires fixed the problem.
