I see I am not the only person with a rusted out tire hoist.
Good news: After a week of daily penetrating oil, lots of hammer whacks, and quality time with a 24" pry bar, I got my center shaft to move.

Bad news: The chain isn't moving.

I'm guessing the spindle should be turning with the center shaft? All 4 bolts have been removed, but there is still not the slightest sign of the hoist coming down from the cross member. What's up with that?

You need to move some place that does not use so much salt

Make up a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF tranny fluid, soak that thing, let it sit a while then whack it with a big hammer. The rust has glued it on. That should get it off.

Mine looked pretty much like that, I got a nice used one from cruiseryard.com for cheap.
 
If you've removed the four bolts that mount the hoist to the plate (you haven't in that pic) then the hoist will drop. Rust is holding it in place otherwise.

I'll take a look at mine later tonight and see if you're missing anything.

All 4 bolts off. I'm whacking it with a 2# hammer. No sign of wiggles. I need to patent that rust.
Nice video. The cross member bolts aren't fairing much better than the hoist, but I'll put that on the honey-do list.
I'll keep up the daily soaking and whacking routine. Sounds like patience is the answer.
 
Anybody know what may be a good household tool to get that thing to turn? Luckily Walmart had something that was able to drop mine low enough to pull the tire. I haven't put the tire back up there yet so I zip tied it to the crossmember Haha.

Looking for a more permanent fix going forward but haven't had time yet.
 
If I were you, I'd take an angle grinder to the six bolts holding the cross-member on and the captive nuts. That's what I had to do. And then when you reassemble it, use nylocs and two wrenches.

Once you get the crossmember out, everything becomes easier to work on.

And be sure to knock the rust off it, etch and prime and repaint.

Not to hijack, does anyone know a trick to get the spare to lower without the oem tools? My new to me rig just had the jack in the back and no bar. Been looking for a used one

If you can find an eye bolt with an eye the size of a quarter on a long threaded rod you could put two nuts together as a jam nut and turn it with a wrench.
 
I should never have read this thread because before I read it I was blissfully ignorant of the fact that my hoist is rusted too.

I couldn't even get the tire to lower.

What I did was place the bottle jack under the spring and twisted it up just using my thumb and forefinger until I could no longer turn it. Then I put the tailgate down and put some of my ponderous bulk on the gate a few times to compress the spring. I was then able to lower the tire down but now I can't get it to retract.

One day this week I will pull the hoist off and see if I can rehab it or if I will post a WTB in the for sale forum.
 
I removed mine a few weeks ago, my truck has lived in socal all its life. Shipping would be expensive but I'm not asking much for it as I won't be needing it anymore.

I won't be able to get an exact quote till Tuesday due to memorial day tomorrow, but a fellow mud member asked me to quote via usps to Georgia his quote was 60 bucks just for shipping. We might want to try to find a mud ship. As an alternative I could separate the chain and winch mechanism from the steel plate put that in a flat rate box then all you would have to do is wire wheel/paint your steel plate and bolt on the non rusted chain/hoist and your in business. I'm just spit balling here.

There are times that I hate living in California. Reading this post, is not one of those times.

The hoist alone is probably the best plan. If it makes any difference, I'm taking the cruiser to South Dakota this weekend to drop daughter #2 off at school. If shipping to Rapid City is any better, it would be worth a shot. Let me know tomorrow. Thanks!!
