A 1970 did not have a tubular style carrier. If you have one it is from a later truck and should fit a 78.

I'm eagerly waiting for my '71 FJ40 to arrive.
It has no spare tire or carrier, and I am considering my options.
The MAF 4+ carrier/cooler is nice, but a bit pricey for now, and bulky,
and requires me to remove my custom rear bumper. Are there any
smaller or OEM options available? I've done an ebay & ih7mud search, and
can't find anything. I'd like my spare mounted on rear driver side. Obviously,
a stable solution that won't rattle around would be ideal. THANKS!!

A 71 would have the carrier mounted on the passenger side. If you want a driver's side carrier, I have one listed for sale in the classifieds. Just search "Boston" and you'll find it.

HEY!! that looks like it would work..
How would I get it reconditioned and installed? I need to find a place to get it sandblasted, primed, painted. Anything else, with hinges? Otherwise works perfectly? Any tire size restrictions? It looks like I'd need to drill some holes, huh?
Is this a pretty stable configuration? Does it rattle? How does it work with the tailgate/liftgate?
What happened to your ebay auction? It looked like there was some interest.. will you throw in a free soft-top and bows?
