Posted in the event thread but wanted to post in the Southerns thread, I'm in +wife and 2 kids.

Haven't decided. 70 is supposedly the fastest, 40 is the shortest and 20 is the most familiar! Plan to get to Ouray late July 30th to have a couple days to settle in.

Hard to believe but between 20,40 and 70 there's ~40 miles difference. We may do a different route going than returning just for the fun of it. 70 has some tolls on it and I may scratch it just because of that. I've done 40 to California and 10 on the way back. Fun to do a trip like that where it is different sights for the whole trip.

I can't speak to the rest of the drive but for those coming in from the east I would highly recommend coming in through 50 or 550 from the south. Monarch pass is beautiful and the drive from Durango to Ouray is world class. You will wish you had a motorcycle or Atom or something else fun to drive on the pavement.

Just for discussion, and for anyone else coming from the south that might be taking a similar path, I'm planning on taking I-20 east until Dallas, then up 287 to Amarillo, then 40 to Albuquerque, then 550 on up to the super secret camping spot...

Planning on leaving late Tuesday afternoon or very early Wednesday morning. Leaning toward the Wednesday departure, making it to Amarillo (9-10 hours) or Albuquerque (13-14hrs), then sleep, then a shorter trip Thursday.

I'm still up in the air, but that is the route I will be going out there and back, if I can make it work. i'd have to come back and go to biloxi for the convention I was trying to work around previously.

Hope you can make it Bama. When it gets closer lets figure out the timing with and a couple others. Maybe we can get a decent group to travel up together.

The trip is shaping up nicely. Getting excited.

Just wondering, how many tanks of gas do you guys plan on burning? I've had my '01 LX470 for a little over a year now,and there is no way I'm getting more than 250 miles per tank of gas. Quick math and its at least 5 full tanks of gas to get from here (Ft.Smith, AR) to there, around and back. And that's before I put anything on the roof, or tow ANY kind of trailer.

I get about 280 around town, so am expecting 300 as a conservative amount on the way up there and back. That being said, I try not to even think about it. It's gonna be a LOT of gas...

looks like I-20 for me to Birmingham, then 22 up to Memphis, followed by the long trip west on 40. Will head north from Albuquerque.

Man I hate driving I-40. I am trying to figure out if this trip is a possibility for us this year. Man I really want to do it.

Being as the farthest I have driven my truck on any one round trip is less than 200 miles this would be big undertaking! And not to mention it would be the first long trip for my now 19 month old! And we have hardly been camping at all in the last year! Let alone ANY primitive camping! I wonder what a good " must" have list would be? My truck has been pretty much mall rated except for a short couple dirt road trips. I literally do not know the full capabilities since I am always the only rig when i go do any offroading. But this trip is one of those dream kind of trips I have wanted to take with my truck!

20 or 40 are about the same. I'll be leaving from Bham Wednesday, 7/31 and going on 20. I did I40 on a boy scout trip growing up and saw enough of the flyover states :grinpimp:
