Well, I decided to give it a go. Bought myself from China:

- Baofen UV-5R Radio kit
- USB Programming Cable for UV-5R
- Nagoya UT-108UV Dual Band Antenna, magnet mount (highest gain I could find at 3dbi 20W)

It should all arrive in couple months by China mail, haha... Should be a lot of fun for not a whole lot of $$. Might save my LJ from getting stuck in the grill of a big west coast logging truck. Thanks Andrew, Toshi and Dangil for your help.

Very good info Dangil. Also, for anyone that is interested in just RECEIVING VHF channels (listening in), you can buy a scanner for not much $$ and you're not required to have any license or anything. There is no ability to transmit, it just sits there and scans all the frequencies waiting for chatter. If it picks something up, it will lock on that channel for a period of time.

I have one right now that I turn on if we're on a well used logging road/back road. Once I get my HAM license and VHF radio, I'd probably be willing to let it go to another MUD member if anyone is interested. They aren't that pricey, I think I paid $50 for mine 2nd hand. Has A/C adapter and battery pack too. Pretty useful. http://answers.dicksmith.com.au/answers/8465-en_au/product/D2765/questions.htm

sweet.
This should be good for making sure I don't get swiped off into the ditch by a logging truck.
Was planning on spending way more than this. Figure this will do the job just fine.
Budget YES!

as much as I loathe radios, turns out I have a handheld scanner, two handheld vhf's, two cb's, and a regular vhf in a box.

How f'd is that? ( most are for sale...:grinpimp: )

Mel and I may try the road out to renfrew from lake cowichan today for s***s and giggles. I may drag the scanner and a handheld along to see if they pick anything up.

Will be interested to know if you pick anything up out there.

I'd still like to get a CB. Are you selling yours? If so PM me with model/price please.

I tried it a couple of times and didn't hear anything, but it's Sunday so there probably isn't much to hear.

At the renfrew pub now , I'll give it a go on the way back too.

As for the cb's , one is big and old, other less so.

I'll have a look at them later. See if the mics are there etc.
Price will involve beer....

Hey Toshi, I bought the radio you recommended quite a while ago now and it never showed up. How long did the shipment take when you ordered yours? Did you order from this seller or someone else? Wondering if this dude ripped me off. I sent him a message; will see what he has to say I guess.

Or maybe Canada Post is intercepting these radios now?

I ordered an hid set from china and i missed the parcel pick up today.
6-8 weeks usually

The New (er) Resource Road channels make it much easier to find the freq of the road you are on.
If your radio has enough channels, assign 84 of them to the RR freqs and from then on, just select the channel you see posted on the signs on the bottom of the logging roads.
You just assign one bank to the RR freqs, and make the channel name the channel number. eg. "12A" etc.
I couldn't find the list on the net just now, but it comes from Industry Canada and any radio shops can program them into a radio for you. (9 load channels & 75 road, I think).
I wouldn't be worried about having a license if you just use them on the forestry roads, you are increasing the safety of everyone using the road, but as was said..."no chit-chat". If you want to chat with others, a CB works great for "line-of-sight, or get a Ham License. I know some the TLCA guys here in Calgary got together and ran a Ham class so they could use 2-meter (VHF) radios. Some repeaters have "phone patches" that allow phone calls, a nice thing to have in an emergency.

Last time I ordered something from China,( led lights for the kitchen, 10% the price here) a couple weeks later my credit card went on a $1000 shoe shopping spree in Paris without me....

feel comforted? :flipoff2:

The seller got back to me and reassured me everything was ok. So here's to hoping the radio will show up ok still. It's been about 5.5 weeks. I'll give it a couple more and see what happens.

seapotato, yeah I've had an unfortunate experience like that before. Was an employee of a legit company in the US that ran up a bill at a jewelery place on my CC number. They got fired shortly after though.

Kevin, thanks for your input. This has turned out to be quite the informative thread. Can't wait to get my hands on my VHF if/when it shows up.

I can't remember if that was the exact one I used... generally it takes long enough I forgot I ordered it so its kind of like getting a present in the mail...

Resource Road Channels

It looks like Industry Canada is going ahead with the standardized Resource Road channels this year (quicker then I thought). It looks like they are simplifying it a bit, fewer channels and no Squelch Tones.

Got a message from the guy that sent my chinese radio. Seems like it was turned back by customs. I wonder if Canada is stopping these radios from coming in now? What a PITA.

Interesting, have u called Canada Customs to ask?

I have had LED bulbs turned around by customs before. It's probably some stupid agent.
