are those any good? $40 seams reasonable, I have had them on cars in the past (cracked dash) I am thinking it may be good to get one bofore the dash cracks but I could be wrong

Both of mine came from warm climates where the owners thought they needed them to protect the dash. I just find it a hassle. I think my vents don't heat as well with the carpet one on. The velour one fits really nice I just don't like the looks of it.
I had a '88 Z that had a dash mat - it didn't look that great (a little cheesy) and it slightly impeded the vent flow - but the dash plastic still looks great today. The dash in my 77 Bronco never had a dash mat and sadly got all cracked up. In the LC, the dash looks complicated and big and not cheap -
I put one in my 91...looks good!
I read that Vinylex by Lexol is tops to prevent cracking , if that helps
and also found out today that the 3 Lexols are available at OSH and cheaper than Pep Boys, dang it (after I drove for an hour to get them at the latter...)

Damn, now yer bitch'in that you have to take a road trip in the new ride.
From past experinece, in my opinion the worse thing you can to is use the snake oils on the dash. Leather yes but everything else just clean with a damp cloth.
