Hi all, a lot of good info here. Had my Surf (1989 5 speed, 2LT, mechanical inj. pump 120k kms) since 2007, used for camping (800lb tent trailer) and fishing. Over heated climbing I-95 in N.H., lost coolant, no white smoke. Red coolant bubbles out of head behind injection pump (gasket?), pressure in rad when opened (cold). Still ran ok mind you. Finally pulled head, found small cracks between cyl 2-3 and 3-4. Having trouble locating new OEM head p/n 11101-54121. (I would be using my current valve train (valves/cam/springs/shims,etc).
Any suggestions. ToyotaPartsDirect.ca will not reply if still available, Partsouk said currently unavailable.
What about bare China head? However, I hate to waste new gasket kit with low quality head and my time.

Thank you, George, Montreal,Quebec, Canada.

May have to do a 22R carbed engine swap. I still have a 1982 Celica intake manifold/carb on my parts shelf.

Ouch. Amayama says it's available out of Japan. [cough] $1400. Keep in mind they frequently say things are available when they are not. Don't get your hopes up, even if you have the $1400 to spend. Also, on big items they are known to cancel orders.

Small crack between cyl. 2-3 and 3-4. Was not smoking. Head gasket was leaking for sure. I may be able to get an OEM head in the US, $1100.00 US.
Should I lap my old valves in the new head, or do I need to grind the valve seats?
Thanks, George.

Hi all, I found a new Toyota 3L cylinder(11101-54131) head to install on my 1989 Surf.
Are the improved 3l heads compatible with my 2LT block?
Thanks, George.
Ask in the diesel forum.

You can re use valves if they are good but if it was my build I’d go for maximum reliability. Use Dokuro valves, the original supplier. You can get em through Advance Auto via World Pac. The part numbers are: intake: ITY-0524; exhaust: ETY-5524
