I installed one of these in my cruiser tonight because my OEM cd player has decided to stop playing cds and I had one laying around. Very easy with the Wal-Mart dash install kit directions and wiring harness. The wiring harness uses the 2 spare factory connectors that are already wired in the truck. Not the one that was in the OEM radio.

The dash kit is nice because it has a cubby hole underneath the cd player.
It fit perfectly except i had to trim the wood grain above the cd player a little so the player door wouldn't rub when it opens and closes.

I had to disconnect the factory amp.
This player sounds a lot better than the factory one and seems to pick up radio stations better.

good job, looks like a nice clean installation...

Thanks. The kit uses the 2 mounts off the factory radio and it is in there nice and tight! I wish the display color could be changed to green instead of the white and red.

Are you getting any engine whine coming across the new stereo?

I installed a Sony CDX-GT810uW a couple of weeks ago. Tried 3 or 4 different ground locations, but can't seem to get rid of some engine noise that's coming across the system. It's not terribly bad, but somewhat annoying. May try one of those noise filters.

I was supprised the sound quality is quite a bit better than the factory unit.

Changing grounds won't eliminate line noise. You need to add a filter and/or reroute your power lead.

I havent noticed any. It sounds much better than stock.
Did you make your own harness?

I was about to give up on the install. Then people told me that those extra wiring harnesses are for aftermarket stereos. And I about died.

I installed some sort of Pioneer CD player, I don't remember the model number, but it's one with iPod controls. I melted a hole in the back of the space-filler that goes beneath the CD player, since I don't carry CDs in cases, and put the iPod cable into it, along with an additional headphone jack, for non-iPod MP3 players, portable DVD players, etc.

It's sort of a cool, lazyman's design, I'll post pictures if anyone's interested.

I bought from Crutchfield, so I used their harness. Their harness hooks into the factory harness from the amp, so you can leave that in play.

Thanks. Since I plugging into the factory harness, I'm getting power the same as the factory setup. Hopefully the filters will get rid of it. Hate to drop $40 to get rid of it, but that's about all I can figure to do at this point.

What condition is your cap/rotor/ignition wires - deteriorating ones can cause the whining noise you are speaking of.

Hmm... hadn't checked in a while. The last time I checked the wires (a couple of years) they were well within spec. Cap and rotor are orginal. Had planned on PM'ing them at 120k.

Just had installed a Clarion on my 80, it rocks! The installer used the same mounting kit, so far no complaints. Radio and installation for about 200, plus the whole setup has warranty. Myself doing the whole thing probably would save some $$ but probably Something would have gone wrong.

Very Nice Install!!!

not to thread jack, but has anyone installed subs themselves, i have mine, i am just sick of installers trying to rip me off, i dont have too much confidence doing it myself but i am pretty sure i can do it, if anyone could help that would be appreciated, just send me a pm i guess
thanks, oh and good looking stereo there, its amazing how much better it sounds with just that. love it

Are you saying you purchased the wiring harness at Wal-Mart?

Thanks for that link, they have exactly the harness I need for my install, but I didn't see a place to buy one except ebay.

Yes. Scosche TAO21 was the # on it.
