Have a few questions...I have had a few 40s but the oldest was a early 74.

Now I have purchased a 1966 fj45....it being 45 yrs old some POs have had their ideas and mods done to her'

First...a sopt on the firewall has been cut and mod-ed...this is a cancer free rig..any idea/reason why someone would do this...

Second:

As stated...I dont know much/anything about the early ones...The colum shifter has been changed to the floor....and it might have a later tranny installed due to the rear carrier....this is not OEM is it? where would the tranny mount have been on origional?

Third:

Can an older transfercase be mated to a H55f tranny to keep the parking brake?

Plans are to replace F and 3spd with 2F and 5spd

Thanks for info...

Is this a toyota engine or a v8 swap ? The transfer case hanger is not original to this truck.

Its an "F" engine.....I was pretty sure that the T-case hanger was not OEM

thanks

it appears that someone at one point put a F motor back in the truck... Guessing there was a v8 at one point.

I was going to say the same thing. Are the engine mounts riveted in, or have they been welded? I would guess that the mod. to the firewall was to allow headers or maybe starter to clear on the V8.

No, you cannot use the older transfer case with an H55. You will have to buy a split case. If you get one out of a troopy, then you will still have the handbrake on the transfer case.

Have you looked at Kevin's site (AWL-TEQ) for wheel arches to replace yours? I bet he can make those perfectly.

Cheers,

Josh

Hey Josh,
Thanks for the info...and help...but the US wasnt blessed with all the cool rigs you all have there and other parts of the world.
first of all here in the states 45 are hard to find...like chicken lips...troopys are toughter than seeing big foot, unicorns, jackalops.

and dont know anything about AWL -TEQ.... web site info??

Regards C

Josh knows all about the U.S. and Troopys. He's an expat yank living down under and has helped import our Troopys.

Search for Awlteq here on Mud. He's a craftsmen up in Canada and can pretty much build anything you'd need for a cruiser.

Original didn't have a support for the tranny/transfer combo, they just hang out there supported from the bell-housing. I've seen that support/mount before, MAF may have sold them. You're right though, not OEM.

When you pull the 4spd, out of the 60, it'll have a cradle mount going under the transmission, just weld a couple of pieces of angle to the 45 frame and re-use the cradle mount off the 60.

That rear mount is a AA mount for when you lose the bellhousing mounts with a csb swap.

The firewall clearance is how a poorly set csb might need to be clearanced for the valve covers. If you tried to set it so the transmission didn't need to be moved forward you would have to do that.

My first thought too. BUT...

wouldn't the dizzy hit the firewall way before the valve cover?

UNLESS........

it was a Ford V8??????????????

Chris, my blue 45 suffered a similar fate without an engine conversion. The PO had some nasty-assed aftermarket heater installed that required the installer to cut a nebulous [because it bore NO resemblance to any other geometric shape!] 6x8 hole in the passenger side of the firewall...Along with aborting a substantial part of the firewall support.

As fate would have it, I parted out a 65 40 a few months later and cut out what I needed from it. Remind me when we meet and I will show it to you.

Best

Mark A.

FYI, with a SBC with early points style distributor, the valve cover hits before the distributor. I purchased an fj40 a long time ago with a v8 swap and the PO/installer "clearanced" the firewall with a big hammer. No clearancing necessary at the distributor, just for the valve cover/head on passenger side.

X2 Had a 1974 FJ-40 with a 283 that had points and the firewall was "clearanced" for the valve covers.
