Hi Folks,

Been driving my new '84 Bj60 for two weeks now. Still on the first tank of fuel! 455 Km and at about a 1/4 tank on the guage. I will fill up tomorrow and check the L/100km. I have a few questions about the new things I am 'learning' about on the cruiser.

I have 'learned' that the truck occasionally does not crank over after the glow light goes out. It just does nothing at all. So far I have gotten by with shaking the truck in gear with the parking brake off which seems to jiggle the starter into a contact position. It has always started so far when I do this. What could this be? I will check the connections at the starter wires and clean etc. Does this usually mean the starter is bad, perhaps has a dead spot? According to the PO and receipts I got with the truck it is 2.5 years old on a rebuild. It still looks shiny... Any ideas?

I 'learned' my block heater wasn't working this whole time. The plug zapped me last night when I plugged it in. Then it fell off. I have a new plug to put on it for now but I don't know which wire goes where into the new plug. I have two bare wires and one green wire coming from the block heater, and of course three terminals on the new plug. Which is ground? Green? or both the bare wires? I need to get this truck plugged in tonight cause its going down to -27C ! I know nothing about 120V wiring....

I 'learned' that my alternator is pooched. Does anybody know if alternators for bj60s are all the same? Would my '82 alternator fit my '84 truck. I thought I remember reading somewhere that they aren't identical....

I 'learned' that the wheels from my'82 don't work on my '84. They are a steel spoke wheel with a painted finish. Kinda like a jeep cj wheel. They rub the calipers on the front but work fine on the back. I think they are cruiser wheels though cause the hub caps fit.... So I put the chrome stock steel wheels(complete with balding tires) back on the front for now until I can get the tires switch between rims.

All this 'learning' and I still loving cruising in it.... Have seen a few others around, mostly newer JDM models, including one huge HJ61!

Any help with above appreciated....

Thanks
Eric

Your starter may have a dead spot, you can hit them with a blunt piece of wood too:D
Check your wires and also give the battery terminals a good clean and the ground lead where it connects to the block.
Not sure about your alternator,if it fits fine.
I would guess your 82 wheels are not toyota and have a different offset.

Yep its learning curve. One day you will look back and say that wasnt so hard after all ;)

for the block heater plug, green is ground and for the other 2 it does not matter.

Thanks for the replies...

Johnny Boy... I like your taste in vehicles! That is how I wired the plug so I guess I will go plug it in now....

Roscoe - maybe I will switch the starter for the one on my '82.... and try the alternator...

Cheers!

I had the same problem with my 87 HJ60.I gave my front calipers a light grind and they clear fine now. You could also try a spacer. My 61 came with spacers on it but I removed them and gave the calipers a grind like the 60.I prefer that over using spacers because the studs have more thread for the nuts then.

Hey Eric, I am new to landcruisers, however I'm pretty sure your starting problem is the same as mine. Neutral safety switch on your tranny. I had to adjust the position of mine....still have to re-adjust it, but it's way better now than before. If it ever doesn't start, I just hold the key and run the shifter down through the gears until the starter cranks (I'm assuming yours is auto?)

BTW, I think I called you about your '82 back in early december when I was looking for mine....I guess you decided to keep it eh?

Casey, Mine is a 5spd so I am not sure if that applies. I don't think so....I had about a 100 calls on the truck, you probably did call me! I have decided to keep it for all those little odds and ends that will be needed on my '84. So far it has come in handy....
