Hi all,

I have a HJ47 Troopy with a 2H engine that is starting to cause me problems.

The EDIC motor is kicking in whilst driving causing the engine to surge. A common problem I hear.
Its only happening when the driving lights are on causing the voltage to drop across the battery which in turn is causing the EDIC to kick in. So this is only effecting me while driving at night.

Im looking for a short term solution and a long term solution.

Short term can I just unplug the EDIC motor, after the engine has warmed up? if so what plug am I looking for?

Long term what can I do to stop this happening? I really would like to keep the EDIC system, and replacing it with a cable is not an option.

Please school me on this - any advice appreciated

If you're running high-wattage aftermarket lights, ditch them because in my opinion there's no point in running lighting that outreaches your safe stopping distance.

Other choices for you may be:
  • recondition your alternator (if it's found to be down on performance),
  • replace your battery (if it's old and dodgy ... although you'd normally be already aware of that from having difficulty in starting)
  • upgrade your alternator, or
  • check and/or upgrade/repair your earths

PS. To prevent your EDIC from stopping your engine (or to prevent it from upsetting your engine rpms due to an EDIC malfunction) - unclip and completely remove your EDIC rod (located between your injection pump and EDIC motor/gearbox)

Could I ask why you're so against a cable replacement?

Thansk Guys,

Lostmarbels you have helped me a few times now :).

I dont want a cable, seems like im going backwards,

I will replace the alternator (I have a spare in the project landcruiser) and see if that fixs the problem if not I will replace the battery (current one has 660CCA and is only 1 year old.)

Forgive my nieviety, but is there a plug on the EDIC motor that can just be unpluged after the engine is warmed up or would that kill the engine? or jam the injector pump onto full open? or just leave it in normal warmed up engine mode.

Thanks!

The edic motor has three positions rich start- run- stop when the cable is disconnected it will be in the run position push it forward for over fuel or pull right back to shut fuel and stop.

Thanks,

If I get caught out and need to travel at night I will just disconnect the cable.

I ordered a new alternator today but its at least a week away.

pass side kick panel ( for us LHD ) is your EDIC relay .. why don't try the easy checking grounds there .. there is a plug BTW

X2 Check the groundcable between motormount and bat. Minus.
Or connect a extra cable between those 2 points for quick check and see what happens when you switch on the headlights.

.......Or connect a extra cable....... you can use your jumper cable for this.
