Hi, I am thinking of putting on a Old Man Emu soft suspension kit on my 71FJ. Has anyone tried this and was it worth the effort? Who might have the best price on a complete kit?
Thanks

Hi All:

Ha! I surprised no one else has posted with the official salute!

I have to say, use the "search" function! This has been discussed before! :D

That said, what do you plan on doing with the rig? Makes a big difference when making suggestions as to suspension modifications.

Regards,

Alan

Ok I'll post up the official salute::flipoff2: Welcome to Mud!

As to the question posted, a lot of folks use Old Man Emu but as stated you're going to have to post up what your plans are for the rig before anyone can give you any meaningful advice. For example, will this be your daily driver? If so do you mainly just have to do short runs around town or long highway commutes? Will this be a mixed use rig, e.g. daily driver during the week and weekend trail warrior or will this be a dedicated trail rig. Again good luck and welcome to Mud.

Thanks for the replys. Due to a recent back injury I can't handle the current ride. The FJ is used 90% of the time on highway, semi daily driver and the other 10% on the beachs and just fire roads. I did try the search function and found a ton of reply but none that seemed to answer my question.
Thanks

i'm concerned that even with a 'soft' suspension you might have issues with your back but if you don't mind spending the cash then go for it!

also not sure if you have a lift or not or even need/want one but i've read you can't beat OEM springs are far as a soft ride is concerned.. usually they've been softened out pretty good over the last 30 years

Hi All:

I had a back injury 12 years ago (slipped disc.) Happened shortly after I got my FJ40.

I found the stock (worn-out) bucket seats to not provide enough lower back support so swapped 'em out for a pair of buckets from a '94 Camero; much better!

You have to remember that this rig will never ride as comfy as a Lexus sedan, etc. It has a short wheelbase and rides on leaf springs (read: old tech.)

There are things you can do to smooth-out the ride of a leaf-sprung rig. Things like making sure the shackle angle is reasonable, shackle bolts are not too tight, spring rate of the leaf pack is appropriate for the load being carried by the truck, and shock absorbers are in decent condition. Also realize that the tires are effectively part of the suspension system. Having too high air pressure in the tires will result in a rough ride. If you run the tires at a much lower pressure the sidewalls can flex more, smoothing-out the ride.

Good luck!

Alan
