Yes. They were patrolling around southside and homwood like crazy. They had chains on the crown vics and tahoes.. National guard was out too. I don't know what they were doing exactly, but they were there.

Someone just told my mom they got a moving violation for being on the road. Said it was declared closed after they left but before they got home.

Leeds PD has surplus H1's that they bought. They and another municipality who did the same thing were on the radio news saying they got flak for it when they first bought them, but that repairing one of those kinda s***ty surplus vehicles was way cheaper than bodywork on a Tahoe or impala, or that they might just roll with body damage and not worry about it. Makes sense to me. Saw one chained up and rolling around Leeds. He was getting around just fine.

The most ridiculous / astonishing thing I saw all day was a Hummer H2 pulling an 18 wheeler, while a Ford F250 with a steel bumper pushed from behind, and got it up and over the hill on Zieglar road between 119 and Rex Lake. We were both like, "Look at these couple of idiots, this is going to be a disaster. Hooooooly cow it's working. No way."

Why is there not video of this amazing spectical?

What is the city going to do?? Send in crown Vics driven by people who have never seen snow on ice before?

Hoover doesn't have crown vics, patrol vehicles are Tahoes.

Left Jasper this morning around 0730-0800 and drove N to Double Springs. Nothing on the roads in this area but most of the restaurants in Jasper were closed last night. From DS hit US 278 to Cullman, roads still clear. E of Cullman got on US 231 S and began to see a little stuff but the road was good. At Oneonta things became interesting.

I've been in Jasper since Monday doing some field work in the general area, driving the 60 and towing a boat (Creeper Thread post 441 https://forum.ih8mud.com/al-dixieland-cruisers/724029-creeper-thread-9.html.).

US 231 south of Oneonta had a layer of snow; time to lock the hubs and hit 4WD. I think I drove at least 125-150 miles today in 4WD.

I lost count of the number of vehicles in ditches, left along the shoulder, or simply sitting on the road.

I made it to Ashville without any problems but a few miles south came upon blockage at the bottom of a long hill. Several tractor trailers and a few cars were lined up. I had to turn around and backtrack from there. This was the only time I had any problem. There was an icy patch where I turned around, was now facing uphill, and could not move. Couple of guys in a Chevy truck gave me a tug and I was moving again.

Picked up I-59 to Gadsden the AL 77 to Lincoln, Sylacauga, Alex City. Road conditions continued to be snowy but with occasional clear spots. Off US 280 in Alex City I turned south and encountered a few icy patches.

Made it home around 1700. My general speed throughout the day was between 30 and 40, slower at times when behind traffic.

This has been some day.

I was messing on ice just a bit ago in the Hoover Met parking lot. Punching the gas and lettin;em play... until I did it on a decline.... it continued sliding! About 40 feet! Right over the curb and into a ravine! Luckily a small tree stopped me on the front driver tire! I calmy drove right out off the curb. Kinda glad I was alone and no one saw me, it was a bone-head move.... Pretty sure the only thing that kept me from the bottom of that ravine was the fact that as soon as I acknowledged I was no longer in control of the sliding, I let off the brake and steered towarded the tree as opposed to away from it.

Thats funny..
Wheres the video?
Did ya calmly go back to the motor home to change dem dirty boxers?

LOL. No. I was actually enroute to Redbox... No harm, no s***-in-pants

It took awhile for people in Helena to come retrieve their cars off the road. I'm sure there are still quite a few out there. A girl down the street from me has her 4runner stuck in a ditch. We couldn't snatch it out today due tithe 15 other cars in the way. Hopefully tomorrow I can help get some of the cars out of the way to get to her's.

Today I spent taking people home from the church to their house.

Holler if you need help. I'm not afraid to snatch junk outta ditches.

Come on over tomorrow. I gotta take someone to work in the morning at some point but that's it.

I'd rather have you there to help instead of listening to someone I don't know giving me poor directions. Plus we'd probably look all cool and junk showing up in cruisers. People might think we be jeepin.

My brother in law started to shoot video, I was driving. I asked him about it, but he said that he started it and stopped it pretty quickly because it looked like it was just going to be a F250 spinning tires.

I'm glad to hear that the LCs have been doing great in these conditions. I just got home from work after 50+ hours of caring for the citizens of Mtn brook. 280 did suck, especially by foot looking for pregnant ladies calling 911.

In response to city's not doing enough, we are or did try, but no one was ready for this. We plan based on forecasts, so we were short staffed for the conditions that developed as was everyone else. I watched people walk by our engine in shorts and a light jacket bc they ran into the gym for an hour or two. We picked up a girl who had been in her car for hours until the fuel ran out, so she started walking without any shoes. We did everything we could to get people to warming stations and provide medical care to those in need, but for those individuals stuck at work, other businesses, friends houses, and schools / daycares, there was nothing for us to do. They were safe, warm, had bathrooms, and hopefully some type of food.

When it comes to the H1s, we had two and they worked great as well as the atv cart. The big question that remains is, how much is a city willing to spend to prepare for an event such as this? Studded tires, 4wd fire engines and transport units, multiple salt trucks, and snow ploys? Budgets suck and you still have to consider adding in overtime, every time the weatherman mentions snow and how many times can they cry wolf before cities stop paying for preparedness.

I'll get off my soap box. It just sucks when we are not totally prepared and then people still call 911 because they slipped and bumped their head. His only request after we get there is to check to make sure it's not bleeding and if he should be ok. We have to ask the grown man, like a child, to please point to the spot bc we can't find anything.

I am taking a crash course in a-trac.

How did you 2000+ guys do in the ice? I really wish I had taken the trooper out to see how that LSD rear end handled, but with it needing ball joints and CVs I was afraid of being stranded (isuzu problems?)

Kaits rodeo did really well, I dont think her ABS works though. I would have taken the 80 out to see how 4wd with an open center diff acted, but I have a deposit on it and didnt want to chance it.

Eric, a simple thank you. You and emergency services should be available for genuine emergencies, and not for people's lack of common sense. Sorry ya'll have to deal with both.

I don't know how anything could do much better than the full time 80 setup in the snow and ice. Even with the worn out tires I didn't really have any problems. Now the ABS system... I'm not sure how it is supposed to behave but I am not a fan.
