Got the little ones all day Sunday and it looks like some nice powder is coming in during the day in NC. Not really up for driving all the way up to Hawksnest for tubing as it is a little pricey for 2 hours, but would love to drive up somewhere and find something for the little kids and us big kids to play in. Any recommendations? And anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome.

Edit: Calling Steve, Linville Gorge, Grandfather MTN?

Did I hear my name??? :D

I had a blast AND JOHN LEE WAS THERE (does that sound bad?) :flipoff2: around Linville Gorge and the Blue Ridge Parkway last Sunday. We had about 6" of snow up on the Parkway (actually ON the Parkway) with few other vehicles around.

Depending on accumulation I'd check out Kistler Memorial Hwy (parallels Linville Gorge on the west side) then consider taking FS 210 north to 962 east then north on a surface street to FS 464 up towards the Parkway. This will loop you back around to the northern end of Linville Gorge and Kistler Memorial Hwy. No hard wheeling, just gravel and dirt FS roads that won't be seeing too much traffic. There should be plenty of places to stop but not big tubing areas.

Oh, and make sure the BRP is open too if you want to travel it.

Cataloochee has a pretty good tubing run if you are interested in that... The parkway is completely shut down in NC with the exception of the Asheville connector, but going up toward linville or upper Madison Co.(Hot Springs area) would be pretty cool i'd imagine... I went to maggie valley last weekend and just now cleaned the snow/salt grime from the 80, so it is definitely out there just gotta look for it...

well if you are looking for some elevation(the higher up you got the more snow :D) your best shot is to hit up highway 215 west of brevard.... it climbs all the way up to the Parkway at roughly 5300ft in elevation and they never close it like they do the BRP or 441.

When there is a big snow I usually head there and park at the crest where it intersections the BRP and get out and do some hiking on the BRP which you usually have to yourself. Have to say though maybe this wouldn't be the best place for kids are they are calling for near "blizzard" conditions at the 5000+ft elevations

anyways here are some picture from last december when I was up there after the big storm 16" to 24" inches :grinpimp:

pretty high up :D

I bet you had a good time trying though!

hehe yes I did........ slid off into a ditch after my last full throttle attempt. Thats when Mary E flipped out and refused to go any further with me :grinpimp:

Gonna hit Maggie Valley early Sunday. The tubing park at Cataloochie is opening Saturday. The kids should love it. Anyone that wants to meet up, let me know. JP, Marshall, Steve, Jay, etc.

Let me know,

Yep if I head up that way I'll let you know; my plans are still up in the air.... but all this snow talk has got me leaning towards heading that way.

Regardless have fun with your kids and enjoy the snow

Have fun. I'd love to go but I'm probably going to have to work Sunday. Board meeting (bleh), then listing products on SEO website for sale, then consulting, then SEO scouting routes on my computer... :crybaby:

Thanks, that's why I decided on Maggie. Plus it is closer, and if it is too cold at the top we can still find something to do around town.

I'm in to go to the tubing area!!!

Well the good thing about catalochee's tubing is it is located right on the valley floor. It literally sits about 50 yards off of highway 19..... so you won't be on top of the mountians in the howling winds.

Also if you continue west out of maggie on highway 19 about 4 miles the road climbs up to 4500ft where it intersects with the parkway.... great area right there for sledding; thats where the fam and I head to do our sledding. No lines and its free :D

What time are you guys headed up? My kid has a bit of a head cold, so long as it doesn't get any worse i'd be game.

I'm in simpsonville, would be trying to meet up with you guys on your way up. Depending on which way you coming up i'm right off 385.

The daughter has to go to rehersal for play at our church's christmas eve service so i've got the day to do whatever i want with the 2yr old.

I'll be driving the Heep, still waiting on my rear plate for the ranger OD before i can put the cruiser back on the road.

Aight fellas I am rolling out for Maggie Valley as we speak.... if anyone needs me give a ring. Maybe I'll see you guys at the tubing place in the AM

Have fun be Safe:cheers:

DOHC,

I should be rolling out of Simpsonville around 10am if all goes well. PM me your number, or call me after 9:30am to confirm that I am going if you are interested in following up.
