You getting that repair done at a dealer or local shop? And do you mind sharing what they’re charging? I need to do that repair soon.
There is a local import shop in town that I go to for stuff that either I know I will do more damage than good or just flat out don't have the skills to do confidently on my daily driver lol. They are not the cheapest in town for independents but have been in business over 30 years and a long time ago when I worked at a German dealer all the customers took their cars there after the warranty expired. I think in my case to do the Egr cooler box gaskets which had pretty much turned to dust, the coolant valley gasket, associated parts and coolant all Toyota dealer parts, was around 1000-1300 all in. I don't know if that is good or bad anymore but it is basically the only shop in town I trust to do the work.

Seems like a fair price. What else could be done while they are in there?

Well, I have already replaced the radiator, hoses, water pump, spark plugs, so as far as while it's out nothing else really, maybe the pcv valve as you have to take some stuff off to get to it. I am not super familiar with the 4.6 but If it is like the 4.7 I had in my GX470 or the 4.3 in my LS430 they are pretty solid with basic maintenance. Any engine will have its quirks I would think though. More than happy to have some more experienced members chime in on your question here to get some more value for you. Also I did a quick and dirty wrap of the Lexus logo which turned out as horrible quality as I had expected for a quick and dirty but wanted to see what it would look like black before getting some matte black wrap or painting it black. What you think?

++ Potentially the 4 knock sensors if you want to replace those. I chose to do those since they are 12 years old. They had mentioned it is not required to be replaced but that in their experience you have a 50/50 chance they will throw codes after they are taken off and put back on. I opted to have those done which did not have to be done and about doubled the bill so that hurt a bit. So ..I have not personally done the job, taken them off and put back on so I cannot comment on whether you should or should not replace them, that is up to you. My GX had spent half it's life in NJ and New york and am honestly shocked nothing else broke or rounded off in their tear apart based on my experience working on the rest of the GX.

What color is your rig? I think a darker contrasting color would look good. When I raptor coat my rig ODG I’ll likely use FDE as a contrasting color on various accents which includes the LEXUS letters in the grille.

I agree about the engine maintenance. These’ll run forever as long as the SAIS and cooling system are routinely checked.

I have mallcrawler old guy silver. Lol. Helps to hide the scratches from our 7 year old and hound/lab mix.

Cars back from the shop and no knock codes or leaks..couldn't wait to put on the grill so popped it on and attempted to do some remedial photo editing. Lol. Have a good Thursday.

Urj150, thanks for getting the swag to me and the replacement grill. Unfortunately this one is damaged as well, starting to feel cursed with this thing. If it was just one lower tab I wouldn’t worry about but it has two broken lower tabs on the same side as the broken upper mounting tab.

I’ve never had a knock sensor failure on any vehicle in the last 30+ years. Only time I heard on 460 was because rodent chewed on the wiring.

Another one is launching today.

Maybe three's the charm? 🤦‍♂️

🤞

New to the forum and the grille on my car is the first thing I'd like to tackle. Just picked up a gx460 premium this weekend and it came with some cheap looking mesh grille. Not really digging the look. Debating on picking one of these up since they look pretty good, but realized that some of the guys here are just tossing their OEM grills when swapping them out. If anyone is interested in selling their OEM grill and surround, do lmk. I want to get rid of this mesh stuff asap...

On that note, looking at the garage alpha website, they do have the OEM Prado 150 belt moldings on hand and for a very reasonable price. Might pick up a set since my front left needs replacing anyways.

Urj150, are the prado belt moldings the glossy black material or the matte rubberized stuff that's found on a lot of Hondas/acuras? Do they match the TRD grille texture?

Whoa that mesh grille is ghastly! How’s the rest of the rig?

Heh, fortunately, everything from the previous owner is purely cosmetic. Seems to have been a weekend car for the family, so a bit of wear and tear on the interior, but no tears or stains. Exterior is fair for a car like this. Been run through the gas station car was a countless number of times, so has that signature swirly black paint, but nothing paint correction can't fix. It's got a full 4-5 mils of primer, paint and clear left on all horizontal surfaces so there's lots to work with.

Very mechanically sound rig though. Lots of paperwork and service history at the dealership. Fresh set of Michelin Defenders on the stock 6 spoke wheels, new transmission, and a new radiator. All TSBs and recalls done. The to-do list is pretty short for this thing, but the grille is really going to be the first thing to go. HID ballast, transmission cooler, and a paint correction should be all it needs for now.

Sounds good! Glad it’s not trashed out. Usually those grilles are indicative of vehicle condition. Especially inside.

Could just throw the Superman symbol on it and rock out? I think those were pretty common back in my 20s...about 20 years ago lol.
