An easy field test to see if within factory spec snap ring to hub flange gap of less than 0.20mm, is to: Grab outer tulip of front drive shaft (AKA: FDS, AKA: CV). Pull and push. If you see gap change between metal shield of FDS seal and steering knuckle, gap is to wide.
This picture just happens to be with wheel hub off, only pictures I found on file this morning. Circled in red is metal shield of FDS seal.

After driving: Remove grease cap, tires on ground: Axle of FDS should be pushed out on it's own, measure gap between hub flange and snap ring. If on jack stands, a jack under LCA, helps extend outer axle of FDS outward. BTW: reusing grease cap is not a good idea. If seal of grease cap to hub flange is not water tight, water gets into bearings grease, during water crossings.

After wheel bearing service. Wherein, axle bearing and bushing has also been lubed:

Tool(s) for pulling axle to settle grease, can be made with stuff lying around the shop.

Thank you, very much appreciate your write ups on this forum.

I see a lot of feeler gauges but no ranges that we should be looking for. I just put one in from a variety pack that is basically a perfect fit: no gap whatsoever. But is that too tight? And conversely, how loose is too loose?

I think the first post covers the requirement from the FSM pretty well:

"Pull out the drive shaft outside the vehicle and select the snap ring which ensures the clearance b/w the tip of the flange and the snap ring is less than .2mm (.008in.)."

If you've a few snap rings, of various sizes in hand. Start with 2.8mm, see if it fits, no. Than try the 2.6mm, no. 2.4mm yes, it's good. Just test fit, with outer edge of ring, once one fits sung, install it. If so snug you must tap into groove, it's to thick/tight. If to tight. It wears down the brass bushing a little, until it's not.
