I have a 1978 BJ40. It smokes initially on startup then stops for the most part in 1st and 2nd gears. When I shift to 3rd or 4th, I can pretty much smoke out the freeway. I just had the engine "rebuilt" so is it something as simple as a minor adjustment? I am a newbie when it comes to diesels so any help is appreciated.

Also, I live in the Dominican Republic so a "rebuilt" engine could mean anything down here. It has plenty of power but I have also noted that my mileage per gallon is not nearly what it was before the rebuild. That is tied to the smoking issue I am guessing but again, not a pro here.

Thanks in advance

When you're smoking out the freeway in 3rd and 4th, what color is the smoke?

If it's black ... Sounds like they turned up your fuel too far.

sorry...it is totally black smoke.......is it easier to adjust or do I have to take my chances with my local mechanic?

It's easy... do a search for fuel adjust and you will find a ton of info. Also, invest in a Pyrometer as that is the only way to be sure you are not overfueling...
