Smoke Bomb - Ghetto Fabtacular 60 Rebuild (1 Viewer)

Been on this forum way to long and Love ya all. Picked up this 60 series (practically a neighbor) and though it drives, it smokes like crazy.

Rules of the Game: I've not touched anything and am giving you what I know from talking to the PO... thats it. You guess and in a few weeks I tell you what the problem is. Winners will get nothing. Just bragging rights.

Here is what you diagnose (guess).

1. 196,000 miles
2. No oil in radiator, no water in oil (that I know of)
3. The oil cap is not white and cloudy when I open it. Rather dirty and oily like it should be (for those guessing head gasket)
4. It sucks in the power department (don't they all... gotta love em)
5. PO stated that he was coasting down the hill in neutral with a good engine, at the bottom of the hill popped it into gear at about 70 and bam.... VRRRrrrrr loss of power.
6. Rumor is that Cylinder 5 has very low compression, all others are

The beast starts up and drives. gutless but If I wanted I could go get a 6'r at the store right now in it.

What say you?

I think item 5 in your list indicates a classic mechanical over-rev situation when he popped the clutch... The over-rev could have caused a piston valve collision..... I think you have bent valves in your head that are not sealing right and causing all that smoke...

Definately sounds like he overreved it.
Did you pull the plugs?

I'd do a compression test first. I have to agree about a bent pushrod or something in the valve train.

You are correct in saying cylinders 5 and 6. (Closest to the firewall.)

The smoke from the engine bay could be from a couple things under the hood. Near the back of the exhaust manifold a pipe bolts to the bottom side for the EGR system I believe. That could have popped off. Although it doesn't sound like an exhaust leak on the video. And the other thing it could be is from a pipe that runs from the CAT into the air injection thingy on the fender. There is a check valve, and if it breaks it will melt the hose and then you have an exhaust leak.

Thank you friend. Yes that is my Pipe smoking ponder chair. I gave it to a neighbor last night. Its a great chair to read books in.

Left to right 6|5|4|3|2|1 Spark plugs.

I've never seen a plug so gunked up! Whoever put these in never wanted them to come out. Broke most of them as I had to use a breaker bar!

Put in clean plugs, pull up a very steep incline, hold it there for a few minutes. If you start blowing smoke you may just have bad valve guides. Pretty easy to address. The oil from the valve train seems to migrate to the rear of the motor and pool around the back two valve stems

The altimeter is from a 4Runner. Actually not too ghetto guys do install those!

Check your oil galley plug on the cylinder head. It is near the #5 spark plug hole. If it blows out oil will literally free flow down the side of the block. It could be leaking. i.e. ready to blow. The plug is kinda rearward facing on the side of the cylinder head about 3/16" diameter.

I like the dual seat belt receivers... lol

I kinda dig the vlog aspect of this thread. You sound like an awesome guy. About as awesome as that 60 there.

Question on putting new plugs in, will they make the smoke go away, I'm thinking no. I'm thinking that the head needs to come off.

1. I want to look at the pistons.
2. 200,000 mile cruisers should get a head job, they've earned it no?
3. The process of doing this will allow for inspection of pretty much everything you guys have advised.

V8. Just do it. You have all that dreadful smog junk still on there, I think FJ60s were a twisted experiment to see how "Rube Goldberg" an engine could be and still be pawned off on the public.

C'mon Lehiguy! There is something about not having to worry too much about breaking all the other weaker links that I like. Give me the Slug engine all day. The H55 makes does make it more livable. This is coming from a guy who went around the US last year at 55mph. Slow down you'll see more!

Anyways... here we are. tore into the engine a tiny bit.

Anyone want to change their diagnostic? Last chance before I pull the head!

It's called a push rod Mike. And a valve guide is what the valve rides up and down in and keeps the oil up in the valve train. Not a head bolt like you were pointing at with the camera. lol

You sure you want to rebuild your motor?

I'm gonna guess you have broken rings and gouged cylinder walls on six. Oil and fuel is mixing in there somehow. Maybe a broken intake valve like the other dude mentioned.

Did you rebuild that motor for ya buddy down the road then have to buy the car cause it came out not quite as expected?

Take a look at this thread. The thing near the #5 spark plug is on the outside of the cylinder head. I highly recommend it gets tapped and a plug installed. The factory solution was something just shoved in the hole.
