Alright ill start by saying im a complete newbie to the landcruiser world and community. I love them with a passion I've been looking for one for about five years and about a month ago my "ole'lady" pretty much fell in my lap but she has some issues well personality but im in the beginnings of understanding the pains with the smog equipment. Any advice is much appreciated as I am not at all a mechanic and im teaching myself as I learn. Also I live in cleveland tn and will shortly be paying my dues.

Welcome to the madness! First off, I would buy one of these. Go thru the vacuum diagrams so you understand the parts & can check if any lines are broken or incorrect. A 60 can be a headache. I don't think Cleveland makes you emissions check there so you have some options. If everything is running & attached correctly I wouldn't touch it. If things are missing or broken I would de-smog it. Look in the 60 section & there is a sticky for desmogging how to. What carb is on that thing? More pics!!!

Funny my friend in McDonald sent me that pic 2 weeks ago. I was going to take a ride up to Cleveland & take a look at it. Looks like you already had you eye on it ;) he said it was sitting off hwy11 near the Ford dealership?
 
Yeah my dad traded for it you wouldn't believe have what I paid for it I saw it and bought within an hour of it getting to the lot I need to post more pics I just haven't had time I would like to have it running for the new years run
 
The PO had all the hoses screwed up and I got to run long enough to get to my house but I went outside the next morning and she's wasn't getting any fuel to the carb again the cleaning part of the carb rebuild was not done correctly so now im gonna have to take it off myself and do it the right way good thing I didn't pay the guy before he started pissed I am
 
Do you have to get it smog tested? Or anticipate having to get it tested in the future?

A desmogged engine bay is a lot nicer to look at and work in!
 
No. I don't have to worry about any emissions where I am in Tennessee. I basically want to desmog for the shear reason of less headache. I'm pretty sure its the reason my ole lady won't run. I really want to get her going this is my first Toyota of any sort and I've wanted a cruiser for several years I've owned her for about 2 or 3 months and have driven her for a total of 20 minutes I just don't have any experience with the emissions side of mechanically inclined and honestly I need help!!!!!!
 
Get a header. Remflex gasket. Lots of rubber plugs and eight metal plugs to block off where the air rail is. 1/8 will work but are not correct. I have always gotten mine from TPI as they are metric and fit properly.

What's up fellas? I have read and read the desmog thread in the 60 section. I do.t know what it is I just can't make any sense of it and beginning to get a little frustrated with it. Every time I go out to start pulling the s*** out my head goes blank im sure some of it is lack of confidence. I just want my ole lady to run and I am prepared to take extreme measures so here it goes the swallowing of the pride I NEED DESMOG HELP I will provide lunch and beverages non and alcoholic I just cake make it click in my head I've never been real book smart but hands on im king as long as im shown the right way I wouldn't have to do this but their isn't anyone else close to me that I trust to even touch my truck thanks in advance for even the thought of helping me
 
the smog pump and air rail are the easy part. You can do that without much impact to the other stuff. I think you need to recurve the distributor and get the carb adjusted or rebuilt to take advantage of a desmog.

Getting rid of some of the valves and assorted vacuum crap and related smog junk is the challenge.

You might want to go ahead and buy the smog pump eliminator pulley/bracket from Jim C to get a head start on things.
 
My 2 cents...

If you are going to do it, take the time to do it right, and do it completely. It will probably cost around $600 to do it right.

- get JimC to rebuild your carb and dizzy to desmogged spec. This is probably the only way to know your motor is running to its full potential. $450-ish

-get an idler pulley from Jim to replace the smog pump. $100-ish

- get the air rail plugs, egr plugs/block off stuff, and all the various vacuum plugs for your air cleaner and carb. Jim sells these too. $no idea

Once you get all the parts, you can take everything off and put back only what you need. That's probably the only way to wrap your brain around it.

Once you get the new carb, dizzy, idler pulley, air rail plugs installed and the egr removed & sealed... then you can start putting the finishing touches back on. But it won't really make much sense until that stuff is in place.

Take pictures of everything as you remove them so you know where to put back the things that you do put back. Not much goes back. I'll try to find some pics of mine for reference from before I switched to fuel injection.
 
It would appear from the "What have you done to your truck" thread Goode is doing his right now. Maybe follow along but FJ60Cam is spot on. You could go without the rebuild of the carb but to really get your best performance it should be done at some point.
 
After that, put new plugs, wires, cap & rotor, new air filter, adjust your valves, and set the timing - it will run better than when it left the factory!

Baby steps!
 
Thanks guys just finished reading the desmog thread AGAIN and still can't wrap my head around it I guess ill need to start tearing everything out so just to be clear take off the carb and dizzy send to jimc got that then take off smog pump gut it I can't afford to it all right off the bat your estimate is spot on anyhow smog pump off then air rail and tear out all smog related spaghetti s*** and pretty much put it all back in from their? I still don't understand what everything else is it f*** it reckon ill just have to figure it out
 
Honestly, don't even try to understand it until you put it back together. You have to just get in over your head for now. Take pics of the parts you take off and where you take them from. Trust the process, and that we can help you long-distance when you get stuff.

Here's a pic of my drivers fender. Check out all the empty plugs. Granted, I don't have a carb anymore, but that is almost exactly what it will look like.

Damn dude that's nice im gonna trust you and just go for it sir how's that fuel injection I would love to do it to mine eventually
 
I dove in headfirst into my desmog. Had a header sitting in the garage. 60 has ran like crap for years which was the biggest reason I let it set for so long. Decided it was do or die. Everything is removed now. Figured I would get started then figure out the details along the way. I've read the desmog thread many times, but until I can get my hands on things, I'll never understand it. Got my idler pulley from JimC along with the cap kit. $124 total. I did not get the EGR block off plate as I'm going to modify the existing to keep the hose going to PCV. The EGR plate is $35 I think. I've had an oil pan gasket sitting around for a while and when I saw how much room I had to work with the exhaust out of the way, figured it was perfect timing.

Cam, I'll prob have some questions for you when I start installing.
