Smaller diameter spare OK for short term emergency?

I am in a similar situation, bought 4 rock warriors for a good price on craigslist. Haven't been able to find another one at what I would consider a reasonable price yet. Anyone know if there is a cheaper alternative with the same sizing??

$347 before tax and install seems way too high. Here's the larger of the two 285's at Discount tire:

Damn, wish I would of thought of this before I spent all that money I could of put these cheaper 18" tire's on my 20" rims ;). Come on guys the auto industry has been using donut tire's for years as temp spares??? If your going off road why would you go with anything less then 4 spares? Plus, plus ,plus. I'm an old Marine we did not ride around worrying about spares if we needed a spare it's because the VC shot us in the leg. :(

Ah. Thought you were on 18's.
I'll never understand why a 20" 33 costs $58 more than a 18" 33. Way more rubber on the 18...or 17...

The Marine spare thing... -When a Marine buggy breaks...you don't get the BILL. ;)

But anyway--
Full spare = cheap insurance.

Sorry it was late and I as I normally do was drinking Dewars, it kind of turns me into a smart ass. But it's morning now and the only reason I can figure the 20's in 285 cost more is lack of demand??

As clarification, since I will (by next Spring) have two full sets of 33 inch tires, I was figuring on just using a snow tire as a spare in hot weather and an AT as a spare in winter.... I will only be driving around with the OEM spare one winter. I really don’t want to buy five new AT tires since I no longer drive enough miles annually to wear them out. They will get replaced at five or six years regardless of tread depth.

I’ve been looking at used tires, holy cow those scruffy shops really have them overpriced. Two Michelin LTX tires in LT275/85R18: one is seven years old and 50% tread for $50, the other is five years old 100% tread for $150. Michelins are known for weather checking, thses didn’t look bad but I just wouldn’t trust any used tire that old.....

I can go ahead and buy one new AT tire now and use that over the winter as a spare, but then in Spring I would buy three more and miss out on any “buy four” VISA card rebates..... but in terms of the best end result, I think that is what I will do.

Screw used tires. At least I should be able to get a couple of hundred bucks for my current oem spec Cooper Disco HP2s which are nearly new.

I bought a used KO2 from "BestUsedTires.com". After the 3rd returned/replaced tire, I finally got one that didn't leak and/or wasn't bald.
I’m guessing they did not refund the labor cost of mounting and balancing the two bad ones..... how do you feel now about “buying used”?

I find it interesting that the sole criterion for price on a used tire is the tread depth. They never seem to list the age, which is equally, or possibly more, important. Plus you never know if it was abused and run low in its previous life.

Are your new tires really 6-year old ticking time-bombs?

I’ve never purchased a new tire that was older than 6 months, but I always check the date code on each sidewall.

Nope, I ate the costs. Discount Tire hooked me up a bit, but it was still a massive waste of time/money.

Only new tires from now on unless I can inspect them first.
