sm465 compatible with which tcases?

Hey guys i was looking at the 465 for lower gearing and wanted to know what tcases can be run with it in an fj40 that has stock axles and 2f. I know the adapter to the engine is under $200. But then i wanted to see if there are other tcases that will work because the adapter to the stock tcase is $550 and the stock tcase isn't low geared enough anyways.

What are my options, np208, dana 300???? what else

Look at Novak or Advanced adapters. There are only a couple t/Cases that have offset rear outputs. L/C's & the dana model 18(2.46:1) which are both weak compared to center rear outputs. I've broken a few of each. The model 18 is marginally stronger, especially after I made a girdle for it. My current plans are to center the rear diff and make a plate adapter for either a SM420 if possible or use a 2wd SM465 and adapt a dana 300.

You need a Toyota three speed transmission flywheel housing. If you want to pay me 200.00us for it, feel free.



There is not a transfer case that will bolt up to the 465 without the use of an adapter that has an offset rear output, and that would be considered an upgrade or an even wash compared to the Land Cruiser one piece transfer case.




You are concerned about cash; converting to a centered rear output transfer case and then building a centered rear axle is not going to be in the ballpark of cheap.


You will figure it out one day just like everyone else has concerning these vehicles; there is nothing inexpensive about them, especially trying to reliably go slow.


In all honesty Sean, start collecting parts to install the 465 and a Land Cruiser three speed transfer case. Do not be in a rush; make a list of everything you will need for the conversion by reading through the many threads out here on the topic, and documenting it all.

The conversion will go substantially smoother when you know the costs of things and break it down over a longer period of time, instead of trying to half-ass something together on the cheap over a weekend, only to find out that you need to redo everything you have already done, because you did not use the correct parts, put something together incorrectly, or do not have everything you need and do not have the cash to procure the missing components, so now your truck sits, dead.

I just want to know if i did go the 465 route what are my options as far as tcases and what are the costs involved...

One more question, what is the 1st gear ratio on an h42? I'm thinking 3.58..

Invest a few hours of your time and READ about the specific differences concerning these conversions. This information is out here in the FAQ and the Tech Links.


You cannot attach a Land Cruiser transfer case to a 420/465 transmission without an adapter, period.

O what is the 1st gear ratio on an h42? I'm thinking 3.58..

H42 is 3.50


H41 is 4.95

I am in the process of doing this conversion right now --> SM465 to NP203 GRB to LC 3sp TC. I am using the AA NP203 to LC T-case adapter plate. It is turning into a TON of work, but the cost isn't outrageous and I am keeping a passenger-side drop.

And the ~120:1 ain't bad either .

I can't imagine ever needing anything lower than that, and I am sure I will be actively busting birfields soon......

the sm420 will bolt up to the 3 speed bellhousing but you do need a special pilot bearing, indexing ring and transmission input bearing retainer. bolting up and working are 2 different things.

And a 465 requires the same pilot bearing, BCA 202RRE, and you to either open up the pilot hole in the three speed flywheel housing, or to reduce the diameter of the input bearing retainer on the 465 transmission and use allen head fasteners to retain the modified input bearing retainer.

All of this information is out here, and if anyone was to spend a few hours actually reading through these conversions, it is very obvious the differences between the two, and the parts required for the conversions to be successful.





If taking the initiative to read the existing information out here concerning these conversions is to daunting of a task, perhaps modifying vehicles as a hobby should be reevaluated.
