Finally getting somewhere on my bumper and sliders...here are a few pics.

Still have mods to make to the bumper to tie into the quarterpanel wings (white area will be cut out) and need to complete and attach the DS slider...but im getting there.

Thanks...its been a learning experience.

Bumper is 3/16" 4"x6", the slider is 3/16" 2"x3" and the slider arms are 2" 3x16.

The wings will be 3/16" plate steel.
 
Cool....that seems to be the route I wanna take. 3/16 with 2x2 outriggers.....I was thinking 2x4 for the slider......since ya got yours burned in......what are your thoughts on 2x4 vs 2x3? I would like to have a little bit sticking out to use as a step. Which of course could be handled by cutting longer outriggers. I know it's only 1" diff, but.... Just wanted to get your opinion.
 
I started with 2x4, but that chit is HEAVY (estimated, without outriggers, a 6' section of that weighed in around 60-75 lbs)....I was afraid gravity might wreak havoc on them over time and start to bend down. My whole slider now might weigh 55-60 lbs. IMO, the 2x3 is considerably lighter, still wide enough to support the weight of these beasts and my final product will have tubing for rubbing / steps...

If you went with a thinner ga tube, then 2x4 might be fine...but I only had 3/16 to work with for the price it was being offered (FREE), so I had to compensate accordingly.

The main thing is you're working in the garage with beer in your hand! Whatever happens.....don't spill the beer! One day I too will turn my 80 into a trail rig. Any plans to upgrade your suspension setup to account for the weight?
 
those are nice welds!...Steve, Like Sean said above, I'd need access to a welder to weld up the sheet metal (.023 wire) on my half doors. Technically I'd like to get these done for the MLK run, but time is getting short and I'm gonna be out of town this w/e. Let me know if you might could help a brother out next week. If we can't get it done next week, maybe we could work it out in the next few weeks...beer's on me:beer:

Not sure...I have a small 75amp welder...but Brandon has the big boy...180amp 220v. I had to run an extra 220v outlet in my garage just for it to work.

BTW, I just got back from my first trip to Aetna...in the dark and raining to help out Brian (fj60-Covent College), who in his infinite wisdom had decided to go wheeling this afternoon with a couple of buddies in one truck...Doh!

I had to throw the hard top and doors on and just got back ~30 mins ago...what fun it was :D

Re: the Welder, I just need something to do sheetmetal...hopefully with gas

Aetna is fun...wet is even better!

My 75amp is primarily for sheet metal...and it does have a gas tank. Your welcome to it...just give me a holler some time...
 
Just for the record. I have .030 in mine, 110 and nope, no gas. I have been trying to find a conversion for it but the thing is ancient. Gas would be nice.

I concur... Nice looking welds. I wish my looked nice enough to be worthy of showing. Also, your setup sounds like it is very versatile for a home setup: 220V for thicker material in structural projects like your sliders and bumper, with a 110V for thinner gauge projects.

I run 0.23 wire through my 110V welder with gas (Argon/CO2 mix) and find it very nice for thinner projects. For thicker materials (greater than 1/8th), I tack everything together at the house and take it over to a friend's house to use his welder (Miller 250 or 255 capable of 1/2" on a single pass) so I have complete confidence of full weld penetration.

Chris, If you do sort out gas for your welder, I have always found the Argon/CO2 to have less splatter than straight CO2, and less splatter makes for easier cleanup (in my opinion).

yeah, agreed on this. my bro-in-law and i have the exact same miller 175, but his is set up for straight CO2 and mine is argon/CO2 mix. i know it probably has as much to do with how much practice i have on my welder v. his as anything, but 10 out of 10 times, i have can get a bit nicer weld when i'm on mine.

also, heifer, if you're lookin for a good deal on a miller welder, let me know and i'll track down the number on the place i got mine...

and todd, if you're plannin on bein in nashville anytime soon and want to knock out those halfdoors, let me know. you're more than welcome in my house and garage and we could get em done in a saturday drinkin a lot of beer or just an evening drinkin a good amount of beer.

Thanks guys...Im finding welding pretty easy...especially since I was laying on my back welding above my head. Got a nice big amber that popped off and landed on my coat just over my biceps, burned thru the coat, my shirt and my arm. Got a nice pencil eraser size 2nd degree burn on my arm now.

Todd, Im hoping to find some time this week to get the other slider completed before MLK...so your welcome to come out and work on your doors.

Well, thanks to Brandon and his kick a$$ welder, I got my DS slider done Monday night. Sanded, primed and painted it last night...its hanging in my garage curing. Hopefully will have some time tonight to get it welded on.:beer:

Todd also came over Monday night and used my mini welder (75 amp) to work on his doors. My welder needs half marks between settings. 2 didnt penetrate and 3 burned thru...so it looked like a bunch of little boogers all the the length of the weld:eek:, but it is attached. He took pics...

With a little (ok, a lot of) grinding and a little bondo, it will look professionally done when he is finished.:clap:
