What do you have?

What do you have?

Does it really matter? Every 80 with either the 3FE or 1FZ is a slow lumbering ox, no matter how you look at it. People change that with add-ons, but from what I understand the only way to really get one of these beasts to move faster is an engine swap.

If your driving an 80 its a pig!!!Gears will help some.....

Of course it makes a difference on what he has.

I have the 3FE on my 91 & 1FZ on my 95 and there is a significant difference IMHO. My 80 with the 3FE feels like I'm towing a house everytime I drive it around specially from a dead stop to a go. An engine swap is next on my list for that project

yeah i have a 94, i was thinking injector cleaner? but im not quite financialy ready for an engine swap ha

My '92 is doing something like that, but only when it hasn't warmed up yet and only up to about 2200 rpms or so. I think it is something in the smog/vaccum system. But... since Kansas has no smog checks I'm considering the desmog.

Does it not rev up? Feel like transmission is slipping? Have you done any pm on it? 80's are slow, lumbering beasts, but mine definitely moves fine in first gear. Injector cleaner is a waste of money, unless you have been buying fuel from a station that doesn't sell much gas.

I don't know what the advertised 0 to 60 performance is for the 80 series but you could test it against published data.
Otherwise these bolt on units should help with your sled:

I hate these posts...These are not speedsters, they are cruizers...

The 80 has a second gear takeoff...no button. If it is in second, it will take off in second. If it is in any other gear it should start off in first.

Your cruiser needs a diet....

swap cloth seats from 91/92 model for -60lbs
delete second/third rows -220lbs
delete sunroof -40lbs
delete front and rear stock bumpers -50lbs
delete hitch carrier -35lbs
delete spare tire and tire assembly - 75lbs
delete 2cnd row door innerds motors - 70lbs
delete 2cnd row glass- subsitute alum -25lbs
delete rear hatch subst. w/ alum piece -60lbs
delete rear tailgate- extend hatch piece - 45lbs
delete rockers- gain clearance - 28lbs
carbon fiber hood- - 60lbs

totals deletions and subs- - 768lbs

212 horsepower for 5000lb stock rig = .0424hp per lb.
-for 4232lb dieted rig= .0500hp per lb.

So for minimal cost- your dieted rig will be feeling the equivalent to:

250hp or a 5.6% gain in horsepower.

drop in 5.29 gears......and you will be outrunning Cdans supercharged armored behemoth stoplight to stoplight! :flipoff2:

That's some funny s*** right there.....

If it has a second start it will be a button some where like the power button. Put the lever into the 2 range and it should still start in first, but not go any higher than 2nd. If it's starting in 2nd, in the 2 range that would indicate a solenoid/wiring problem (the a442 reverts to mechanical operation when the solenoids are disconnected/broken. Because there is no govenor to detect speed and control the shifting, the lever simply selects the gear definately like a manual transmission)

I know these cruisers aren't fast. I read that the 1fz 0-60mph time is around 12 seconds..

But if you say it is really slow up to 30mph, but fine afterwards it makes me think it's not selecting the low gears. Because in any car performance should be better at slower speeds when in lower gears. That's just the nature of torque and gear ratios.

Not on the fj80. No button. Put it in second, it starts in second, stays in second, never goes to first, never looks for first. sorry. Safety feature for low traction conditions.

well the injector cleaner helped a bit but I understand that its a tank ah, any ideas or tricks to get better mpg?

back to stock setup, stock tires, slow it a bit ( more ? ) driving around .. or buy a commuter ..

any ideas or tricks to get better mpg?Yeah, the trick to get good mpg is don't drive it or hope its all down hill!:D

unfortunately there is no way to see a major improvement in gas mileage in these rigs. however if you are experiencing lower than normal performance and the rig is new to you do a baseline, intake cleaning, air filter, new wires plugs and dist cap. clean out injectors, check the brakes, knuckles, bearings etc should help a bit any additional resistance or dragging could also affect mpg. run a few tanks of higher octane for a bit more peace of mind.
don't forget to swap the lead in your foot for something a bit lighter, that always helps a bit.
