I know that to wheel my LX450 one of the things I have to do is to take the running boards off and install sliders to protect the sides of the vehicle. I read that the sliders will support the weight of the vehicle when needed.

My question relates to this vs. Nerf Bars. I know they are not as strong (nor as expensive). They probably will not hold the weight of the vehicle. But they will provide some protection for medium type wheeling.

Is there a point (other than just Hi-way) were a Nerf Bar could be used safely without concern or is it stupid to consider.

I could get the nerf bars now vs having to wait to buy sliders next year. My current thought is that I should wait until I can afford sliders.

Thanks,
Ken

Sliders, they're way sweeter - plus you can winch off them, jack off them and like you said they're indestructable.

jack them off?? :bounce: :D

Definately wait for the sliders. You won't ever be sorry.

Ken,

dont waste run money on nerf bars even if you plan to wheel here and there. They are expensive 700+ from LC fab shops. But you can also find them cheaper i.e. stubbswelding.com($275) and probably your local 4x4 weld/fab shops. George also has CAD drawings for sliders that you can fab yourself or have welded up for you. Be sure to look at double rail vs. single rail and beware of the cats on DS front if you plan to go to a fab shop.

Sliders or nekid..........:D

Anything in between is a damage multiplier.

Actually nerf bars wil increase the amount of damage you will receive. As a nerf bar is designed to take pressure from stepping on them and not upward pressure from the ground, any upward pressure will push the mounts into your rocker panels. Even under moderate wheeling conditions. ANY contact may cause damage. This will cost many more $$$ to fix than the original cost of a slider. Get sliders and don't waste any money on nerf bars.
Cheers,
Sean

Yer a nasty-minded old gal, aren't you..........:D

ROMER,
NERF BARS AREN'T GOING TO DO YOU ANY GOOD. WHY? BECAUSE THE 80 IS A HEAVY LONG WHEELBASE TRUCK. THOSE LITTLE NERF BARS AREN'T GOING TO BE ABLE TO SUPPORT SEVERAL THOUSAND POUNDS. SO WHEN YOU PRESS THEM INTO A ROCK, ALL THAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN IS THEY WILL BEND AND LIKELY END UP BENDING INTO YOUR BODY. OF COURSE, YOUR DAUGHTER MAY NOT WANT TO DRIVE THE 80 IF SHE CAN NO LONGER OPEN THE DRIVERS DOOR, SO PERHAPS THAT'S A GOOD THING :flipoff2:

MOST IMPORTANTLY, CRAWL UNDER YOUR TRUCK AND LOOK TO SEE WHERE THE PINCH WELD IS. SLIDERS ARE GOING TO PROTECT THAT.

Thanks, You all confirmed what I thought. Guess I'll be saving up for a set of Christo's. I really enjoyed the thread though.

Could be. My experience was that the Manix nerf bars spread the load and kept my rockers from damage. They gave their life to the cause and were toast afterwards. If they are bolted to the stock rocker panel locations, they could pull on the rockers, but mine just bent. Sad, really, that they were not as strong as the sheet metal they were bolted to, but that was a good thing in this case.

We just built a sweet set of sliders for around $200 and two good days in the shop.

Pics? :princess:

I think bolt on sliders are the way to go, for what ever reason you can take them off your totaled cruiser(it could happen look) or if you had to put on new cats. I was thinking you could weld on plates to Marlin sliders or MAFs 4plus sliders for bolt ons.

I have slee's sliders and they have paid for themselves time and time again. Some seem to think the welded sliders have advantages over bolt on because they think the U-bolt will drag...
I think it would be very difficult for this to happen with my sliders since the U-bolts are tucked way under there. It would be very difficult to get hung up on a u-bolt.

Hanna, end of story!
