Best is too much of a matter of taste. Most common I would say is 1 1/2" followed by 1 3/4".
 
i would say that gonna be personal preference just like coyote said.

here is a pic of my front bumper... that piping is around 1 3/4 ish.

Lightly wheeled sliders could get away with .120" walled HREW, but I emphasis lightly wheeled. .188" walls would do better for longevity. If you expect to really use the sliders, go with DOM tubing as it will hold up to repeated hits (resists denting better than HREW).

Actual pipe, like sched 40 stuff, is actually used sometimes. Know that it's not meant to be structural, is generally heavier than the same outer dia. tubing, and dents even easier than HREW.
