Hello all, I am new to the 80 ownership, in Charlotte. Have a 1997, picked up last week, at mechanic shop (Endy's on 24 near Albemarle) doing a few things and getting inspected, etc to get legal on the road.
One thing I wanted to do soon is Sliders, and looks like $850 is the starting prices I can find. I was wondering if there are more "reasonable" shops that do sliders for a lot less, for example looks like if I lived in the "left coast", plenty of FJ80 fabricators at more reasonable numbers.

The only other option is the OPOR with 20% discount and ship to my business address, sale ends 11/24 so trying to decide if I can source them locally (for a lot more) or have shipped from Oregon?

I will do the 2.5" lift afterwards. Thanks and I look forward to joining the club and getting out there with all you guys.

Good to see you made it over here. I haven't been shopping lately but was going to mention the opor on special but your aware of that one. Bump it off road has a decent price point. The other options would be picking up some trail gear universals for 300 i think and weldup on site. Or contact HFS Stan in chesne sc (ncfj on here) or Alex at Carolina truggies perhaps to fab some up but 6-900 is the norm for bolt on apps it seems.

One of those examples of getting what you pay for, mass produced are tough to beat price wise.

Just the cost of steel to make your own will run $300-500 depending on the design and type of tubing used. I've got 35-40 linear feet of tubing planned for mine (~$5/ft for 1.75/0.120" DOM), plus plate, expanded steel grate, and powder coat/paint. The "big" companies reduce cost through buying massive quantities of steel to reduce cost like Trail Gear does from China.

The 80 is a big, heavy rig and needs a strong set of sliders if you want to protect it...

i built my sliders 4 years ago and the cost of just the raw steel was $250.00 and another 30.00 in bolts. It was a bunch of forming, welding, and grinding. then add the cost of electricity, grinding wheel, gas, welding wire, paint, etc... 500 bucks would be a steal.

Thanks. Sounds like the OPOR sale at $599 is a good deal then, good reviews, just might have to wait on it a bit.

I believe the OPOR is a good deal, but shipping will hurt from Oregon. I checked shipping on FJC sliders and it was $165. You could try Mike Thompson, he is in High Point. He is also an FJC guy, but can make anything and is pretty fair on price.

That some good validation. Their regular price is $899, I got a quote delivered to my business for $741.21. Waiting to hear from Two Guys Metal Fabrication. I met them at the UORTC last weekend at a class there, seemed pretty knowledgeable.

Not sure why business delivery is so much lower, delivery to my home would be a lot less work for the poor UPS guy. But someone else set those rules and rates.....

for cheaper sliders your options are, buy trail gear and have them modified by local shop like Carolina truggies.
wait for someone selling a used set
do what you are suggesting and find a set on sale.

Business delivery is on an established route while home delivery is not.

There is a reason small fab shops come and go. Bigger shops generally have two things going for them, first and foremost being buying power. Steel is a whole lot cheaper when purchased by the truck load. The second is that in general they have more going on than just fabricating parts for vehicles along with a more extensive list of stock items. Many also farm out much of their standard items tto job shops that also have the buying power advantage.

All this is why I changed my shop's direction away from custom fabrication because it is difficult to build custom and try to compete with mass produced items like bumpers, sliders etc. Ask anyone that has built some of their own stuff, it is a lot of work.

Thanks LT, I see you are a prolific member here and appreciate your experience, looking forward to meeting you one of these days. I am not sure I would trust certain steel originators. Has been 30 years since I was studying material science and looking at different grain structures and testing steels, I would stay with US or European sourced, or Nippon. Spent some time at Thyssenkrupp in Alabama, with startup, and other things...

Stan,
I didn't see FJ80 sliders on your site only 60's, but if you do have them, sent me a pm or email at izzyandsue@yahoo.com

I'm not up on the current prices to know what is a deal or not. But it may be worthwhile to contact some local fab shops for pricing. PJ at M&M has built FJ80 sliders before, he daily drives an 80 also. His work is top notch. MarsFab and CT RaceWorx (formerly Carolina Truggies) are both good shops as well.

Any of these shops could fab and install custom sliders for you.

I am not doing much metal fab these days for the above stated reasons. I pretty much only do metal fab work when it is part of an overall project I am building for a customer. I cant even come close to the above stated prices.

The other option might be IPOR, Iron Pig Off Road up in Fredericksburg, VA. I looked at theirs for my 100 and they were reasonable, and best of all I could pickup or have installed.

I&S,
There is always the chance that someone around here might also want a product from out west and would split freight costs with you if the timing was right. Might be worth a new thread to see. I'm really hoping to finally get a rear bumper in the next couple months depending on a few finance things but haven't chosen a supplier yet.

My 80 has Slee step sliders if you ever want to see theme in person. I'm in CLT.

Check out the Trail Tailor stuff that @reevesci builds. Can't recall if he's gotten around to sliders yet.

Mike out at Two guys is a good friend of mine. He does a good job on fabbing stuff but i do not know any of his prices. Good to hear you went to Scott's class. Wife is going to go to his 202 course next year and i am taking the next instructor course out there next spring. Still will not teach the wife though.
