Hello all,

I'm currently in process of rebuilding my 1HD-FT. Awhile back it dropped a valve and i've been super slow at rebuilding (but now i'm single after 10 years and magically have a ton of time on my hands again). Cylinder #5 has a chunk missing near the top that probably warrants sleeving. I've been in touch with a local machine shop who said they'll take this on (and also said it probably needs to be sleeved). I plan on rebuilding the engine with a noordeman rebuild kit as well.

Any recommendations on where to source sleeves for the machine shop? (I asked the folks at noordeman but they're on vacation for the next week). I've seen a few places online that supposedly stock them but they dont appear to be from reputable sources.

imo your machine shop should be telling you what make of sleeves they will be using based on experience. mine did on a couple of 1HD T blocks i had sleeved. its hard to tell from pictures, but they were in far worse condition than what you have there.
is the bore not in tolerance of a rebore and over sized pistons?

depending on your budget though, a sleeve would work out cheaper, as you can use a standard sized piston and hone/ use new rings on the other cylinders. providing the other pistons/bores come up to spec.

Yea good point, I think if I just point them to the stock specs it should be fine. These engines are met with hesitation for some reason in the US despite the fact that the Yanmar 6LP is used here in the marine industry.

Budget is no issue here, I plan on building some bigger power though and already acquired parts from PDI and GTurbo in Australia. Getting the rebuild components is the next piece of the puzzle (but i'm obviously waiting to figure out what the machining is going to end up looking like first).

That damage is pretty small and above the top travel of the rings. Could get away without sleeving.
Probably makes sense though if you are tuning it up.

Around here sleeving is more expensive then new pistons, bore and hone. Damage doesn't look bad at all to me, it's above where the top ring would be, i would platu hone, then see check measurements and see where your at.

Appreciate all the input peeps. Good news is noordeman in Australia has sleeves that they sell in conjunction with their complete rebuild kit. Was able to get a brand new OEM head as well. Now just to wait for everything to arrive. Definitely wont set any records here but hopefully on ramps wont give me anxiety anymore after this performance focused rebuild lol.

Where did you find the new head?

I looked last year and seemed like they were available at the dealer. (or maybe it was an FTE head) I think either one could be used but i haven't tired it.
