Looking to upgrade my front door speakers. What is
the size and what are the best ones to use so my
window will go all the way down?? Just ordered the
pocket from Toyota so i could go to a single DIN radio.

Now just have to order the head unit and speakers.

What is a pocket? Looking to install a nice Alpine 1U system in my FJ60, so tagging along for info...

Believe the stock door size for the 60/62 is 5 1/4". You can easily go larger to 6 1/2" but you will have to get a "shallow mount" version so that the magnet does not hit the bottom of the window regulator when rolling down. This is actually an easy mod and you can find a decent amount of shallow mount speakers. I purchased some 3way Rockford Fosgate's (been a Fosgate fan for years) and love them.

5 1/4" in the front, 6 1/2" in the rear. Good speakers will sound good regardless of size. Cheap speakers will sound crappy no matter how large they are. A sub in the back will fill in the bass if you feel you need it.

I was able to fit regular depth Polks, plus a foam insulator to keep water and dirt off the magnet, by surface mounting on the interior panel. It is necessary to put spacers (3/8" IIRC) between the panel and door structure to keep the panel from collapsing.

It does expose the imprint of the stock grill on the panel (just like 90% of the 60's still on the road). The install is reversible with only a few new holes that the old grill would cover completely.

I used Polk 5.25 in both front (no clearance issues) and back so that you can reuse the stock speaker grills. The screw holes didn't all line up but enough did to make it work. I then put a sub under the seat round out the system. I also use a Bluetooth cassette tape to keep the stock head unit and play music through my phone, I even have Bluetooth controls on steering wheel.

I wanted it to all appear stock but upgraded sound, worked out well.

Great vid...instead of washers you can double up or triple the sound deadening depends on thickness of the sound deadening as far as the connections what you did is fine if your ocd the connections can be soldered on. The way you did the sound deadening is exactly the way it needs to be done the factory plastic is a moisture barrier so the way you have done it takes place of that good job. If any of you guys like music and don't have your doors done like this you don't know what your missing.

I installed Kicker 43DSC504 5.25s in the front; no mods needed for window clearance. They're $50 a pair right now on Amazon. I also installed the matching 6.5s in the back.

I have a Kenwood 6x9 sub to mount under the driver's seat but haven't installed it yet. I also need to Dynamat the cabin and doors; lots of road noise and vibration robs the interior of sound.

Just changed the front speakers this weekend, thought I'd throw in my setup.

I installed Pioneer TS-G1320S speakers. Installation involves drilling 4 holes to put the included screws. If you just mount them up like that, they will rub the window but the window will go down just fine. I didn't want rattles or scratches on the window, so I made a donut spacer with 1/4 foam from an extra pair of kneepads. Then I used nylon nuts (I think that's the size) to space out the speaker where the screws go. Wiring, you will need to crimp on a couple male quick disconnects to the speaker wires, which will easily connect to the factory wiring harness in the door.

From one of my earlier posts:

Some decent, inexpensive 5-1/4" 2-way speakers for the front doors are Pioneer TS-G1345R. They are shallow speakers so they fit inside the factory door panels and clear the windows when they're lowered.

The problem is those are discontinued and might be hard to find.

I used these for disconnects on the speakers.

Which Bluetooth cassette did you use and would you mind sharing more about those Bluetooth controls on the steering wheel - was it a package or two different devices? I’m running something similar on my FJ62. Thanks!!
