The great key saga continues.

I'm working with @RAGINGMATT to get my missing ignition/gas key sorted out, but I also need to get some single-sided keys figured out for my '74 FJ40.

I have one key for the original hard top rear hatch that works in the lock, but is in pretty sad shape. Really worn and fatigued to the point where it is likely going to break when I least want it to. According to this:

and the code on my working key (#3311) I have a No. 3 blank. Matt no longer has those.

I also have a No. 5 lock with no key in the current replacement top that was on the truck when I got it.

My DS door is likely not original, as the #1162 code on the lock doesn't match the original top.

So, I guess here is the tech question: assuming you can get a blank (original or not), how the heck can you get a key made for these old single-sided locks? @RAGINGMATT is probably the best source for NOS key blanks and info on how to key these babies. He's the go-to for the double-sided key problems, but he doesn't have masters for the single-sided key locks. He can get us most of the blanks, but nobody seems to have the ability to cut them from the code. From what it sounds like, they are a bear to work on for a locksmith.

Any suggestions?

To select the correct key for your vehicle, you will need the four-digit code that is either on the lock cylinder or the original Toyota key. From this number, the first digit corresponds to one of the six key options available.

Example — 4321 Using this number select key blank #4 , then you can contact me at this Small Business Store Front Link :

Lock & Key Cylinder Service & Repair Factory Code Cutting SST Machine Re-Key & Re-Coding Service

I can cut you a new one to match. If you cannot find the numbers, look at your key as shown in the drawing and select according to the cross section shown under each number. This select option is only available for 1958-1974 side doors, 1958-9/72 ignition switches, and all of the rear doors on the 40 Series.

Judging by the #3 key I have, the pic I posted is looking down the length of the key toward the front. The pic Matt just posted appears to be as if you are looking at the key profile from front to back.

A few notes, as I need #3 blanks too.
1. You can buy vintage aftermarket #3 blanks on eBay. They work.
2. I bought a oem #3 blank from SOR in 2014 for $8.99. I only bought one, I was a fool!
3. I’ve spoken with Kurt, year or so back, and my understanding is he can cut keys to the factory codes.

Bumping this back to the top. Anybody have any luck having single-sided keys cut from the code on the outside of the lock?

Yes. Post your code and I'll share your cut depths. I have a decoder and cutter.

I can/do cut keys but only if I have the lock here to experiment with. That way I can cut a cheapo blank, verify the code is right (i.e. your cylinders have never been rekeyed) and then cut an OE blank (based on availability). Some of the blanks are now discontinued as many know.

Passenger Door: 1162 (maybe 1152) - CUT CODE 15551 (no code for 1152)
Rear Hatch #1: 3311 - CUT CODE: 11351
Rear Hatch #2: 5364 - CUT CODE: 13155

Sorry, we don't sell the loose key blanks at this point, they are part of my hoard for big projects. At some point I'd like to have more time/space to do re-key/cut projects but for the time being we only do them as part of big orders, etc.

hey @cruiseroutfit ,

do u have thE print media dealership SST code book for single sided key blanks o_O

I don't have a "print media dealership SST" code book, I do have the Curtis book and tooling for single side cut through 80 Series. I've got a few dozen different blank options, the #1-6 single side ones are the only tougher ones to get and a few of those are still readily available.

What is with the giant key? That is cool!

I graduated Toyota's T-Ten Master Technicians Program from Penn State in 1997 ,

This is what they gave u when u became lock and re-code / re-key training certified ..

funny thing is if u look at the notch in the middle , its also a bottle opener too ;)

That is rad!

When did they quit using single sided keys. My 77 came with 3 single sided keys that dont fit anything I have.

Ignition/gas door was 9/72 when the key went to the column. 1/75 on the front door when the handle changed. Rear hatch/ambulance doors were all single side.

Sweet. Thanks, Kurt. One step closer. Totally understand you not wanting to burn through your key blanks or nickel and dime your way through life cutting one key at a time.

I guess the next question is, who can do something with those Cut Codes? Is that a trip to the Toyota dealership? Locksmith?

Any good locksmith should know what to do with those codes. They are literally just depths 1-5 at 5 locations. One could do it with a micrometer, file and patience.
